Underneath Main Street, Rochester's History About To Be Unveiled

Construction crews are removing the bricks under Rochester Road starting today.

Here's another reason to venture to downtown Rochester right now: You'll actually see history being uncovered.

Crews have been busy for the past two weeks tearing up Main Street as part of a major construction project that will completely rebuild Rochester Road through downtown. The Main Street Makeover, as it is known, has already closed down one lane of the road in each direction; workers have removed trees and parking meters and have begun to tear up the top layers of the road.

Starting today, they will begin to remove some of the bricks that are embedded below those layers, according to Downtown Development Authority Executive Kristi Trevarrow.

The bricks will be preserved and possibly sold as part of a fundraiser for downtown.

But what's below those bricks? Stay tuned. And consider heading downtown starting today to see history uncovered.
