Training for Brooksie Way Gets Started in Rochester Hills
A program designed to train runners and walkers to compete in the half marathon meets each week.
A 16-week training program designed to get anyone 18 and older ready to run a half marathon kicked off Thursday night in Rochester Hills.
The training is specifically for the , planned for Oct. 2. It's a program patterned after the run/walk or walk/shuffle method used by former U.S. Olympian Jeff Galloway, author and training expert for Runner's World magazine.
Training participants meet weekly for group workouts.

On Thursday night at , participants learned details about the program from training coordinator Sue Barnes.
Amy Whipple of Rochester Hills decided to join the program this year after meeting a few of the run/walk trainees last year that looked to be within her fitness level.

"I like the idea of being a part of a group and being accountable, " Whipple said.
She recently ran her first 5K after completing the Brooksie Way's "Couch to 5K/Jumpstart" training program and said she looks forward to finishing the Brooksie Way half marathon in October.
This is the fourth year for the Brooksie Way, a race founded by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and named after his son, Brooks Stuart Patterson, who died in 2007.
