Rochester Elementary School PTA Among Recipients of Brooksie Way Minigrants

Two Rochester Hills groups, including the PTA, received grants from Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and the Brooksie Way this week for promoting wellness and healthy lifestyles.

The Brooklands PTA started a recess run club this year (see ) The grant will help them continue the program next year.

Kidz Kare Inc., also based in Rochester Hills, received a grant for a back-to-school health clinic for children that is planned for Aug. 11.

Patterson created the minigrant program to use race proceeds to support wellness programs in Oakland County. The maximum award is $2,000, and the awards are reviewed and distributed three times a year.

Here are the recipients of the lastest rounds of awards, given Thursday morning . 

Farmington Community Baseball Cage

• Recipient: Farmington Baseball Boosters
• City: Farmington
• Project: The grant will purchase an outdoor batting cage at Farmington High School to benefit the highschool baseball teams, the South Farmington Blues youth organization and the community.

Yoga Exercise for Kids 

• Recipient: CARE House of Oakland County
• City: Pontiac
• Project: This innovative program consists of four six-week sessions for children ages six through 11 as a Component of Child Sexual Abuse Therapy

Run Club

• Recipient: Brooklands Elementary PTA
• City: Rochester Hills
• Project: Students in grades one through five will have the option to run or walk a quarter mile lap duringrecess. They will be eligible for prizes, based on laps they accumulate.

Adventure Center – Zip Line to Success

• Recipient: Crossroads for Youth
• City: Oxford
• Project: Adventure Center is committed to helping at-risk youth develop a healthy lifestyle through exercise.The grant will be used to purchase guide harnesses and helmets for zip line use.

Back to School Bonanza

• Recipient: Kidz Kare Inc.
• City: Rochester Hills
• Project: The minigrant will fund the purchase of medical supplies and publicity for a free health clinic for under or uninsured children up to age 18 in the northeast quadrant of Oakland County on August 11.

Raptor Respect

• Recipient: Oakland County Children’s Village Foundation
• City: Pontiac
• Project: The Foundation, in partnership with Waterford School District and the Leslie Science and NatureCenter, presents “Raptor Respect.” This project includes intensive, hands-on guided lessons topromote knowledge and appreciation of birds and their native environments. It assists students withstress reduction, positive socialization, conflict resolution and handling challenges.

Life Trail Advanced Wellness System

• Recipient: Brandon Township Parks & Recreation
• City: Ortonville
• Project: A series of 10 activity stations built on the principles of functional fitness. The exercises promotemuscle development and good health and will be installed in the Brandon Township Community Park.

Camp Casey’s Horsey House Calls

• Recipient: Camp Casey
• City: Royal Oak
• Project: This nonprofit organization brings a horse into the life of a child with cancer. The minigrant will funda Horsey House Calls, where a child is surprised by a horse on her doorstep inviting her for anafternoon of riding and fun in her own backyard.

1 Day 5K

• Recipient: Bridgewood Church
• City: Clarkston
• Project: The church is holding its 4th annual 5k run and 1 mile family fun walk on June 3. The minigrant willfund the race coordinator for the event.
