Remembering Rochester's Casualties of the Iraq War

4,802 Americans and allies, including 160 from Michigan, have been lost in the war, which began 10 years ago this week.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week—on March 19, 2003.

Although the war in Iraq is officially over, we continue to mourn those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the past 10 years.

More than 4,800 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 160 Michiganders.

Among the Michigan soldiers who gave their lives are three from Rochester and Rochester Hills.

  • Army 1st Lt. Adam Malson of Rochester Hills died Feb. 19, 2005, by a suicide bomber as he tried to aid an injured Iraqi woman in Baghdad. He was 23.
  • Army Specialist Walter Howard of Rochester died Feb. 2, 2006, fro, injuries sustained earlier that day when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M1 Abrams tank in Ashraf, Iraq. He was 35.
  • Army Sgt. James S. Collins Jr. of Rochester Hills died Aug. 28, 2007 in Kirkuk, Iraq, from wounds suffered during combat operations. He was 35.
