Mayor: OU President Had 'Profound Influence on My Life'

Letter to the editor: Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett weighs in on legacy of OU's Gary Russi, Beckie Francis.

Submitted by Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett

Gary Russi began to have a profound influence on my life when I was a student at Oakland University. I had recently been elected Student Body President, and he invited me to meet with him to discuss my plans and vision for the coming year.  I remember arriving for the meeting very nervous. I remember leaving very impressed. Throughout my years as president, Dr. Russi was an encourager, a sounding board, and a steady guide.

I met Coach Beckie Francis around the same time. Our first meeting was at LiPumas over a coney talking about Oakland University. She was new to town and wanted to better understand the O.U. culture and its wider community context. A few minutes with her and I could recognize her kindness, her sincerity, and her passion.

Over the past 15 years, I have been fortunate to get to know each of them closer through both personal and professional interactions. As Mayor, I have worked closely with Oakland on many initiatives and projects; Dr. Russi's leadership has been a steady and productive influence. His vision for the University has led to such tangible successes as the addition of numerous campus buildings, innovative academic programs, unique community collaborations, and tremendous student body growth. His record of accomplishment is undeniable. His leadership has turned Oakland University into a respected regional and national presence in higher education.

Beckie's success has been stellar as well.  A regular-season championship, several conference tournament championships, and two conference “Coach of the Year” recognitions headline her long list of accomplishments. Over the past year, she has used her success to champion the passage of Erin's Law in the state of Michigan, a law to add age-appropriate childhood education, designed to reduce the stigma and shame so often carried over for a lifetime by persons who have suffered sexual abuse.

Together, this Oakland power couple has made a measurable, positive, and transformative difference in countless ways. Whether you are a student, an employee, an alumnus, a donor, or simply an onlooker from the surrounding community, it is very likely that Gary and Beckie have made a difference in your life.

It's certainly true for me personally.  Dr. Russi is one of the two professional leaders who have most affected my life. His ability to create a positive vision, chart a clear path, engage appropriate stakeholders, and deliver exceptional results is unparalleled in our region.

Beckie’s ability to lead her teams to success with personal integrity and commitment to the whole-life development of players is refreshing in today's competitive athletic environment.

Yes, my life has been enriched by my friendship with Gary and Beckie, and my guess is that many in our community will testify to the same thing in their lives and careers. Thank you both for your years of leadership and service. I look forward to following the next exciting chapters of your lives.

Bryan K. Barnett is the Mayor of Rochester Hills and is a graduate and former Student Body President of Oakland University.
