Library's Summer Reading Program Will Go Around the World

The popular program will again invite kids — and adults — to read and earn prizes this summer.

The Rochester Hills Public Library's popular summer book program is always one of the most anticipated rites of summer vacation. With different tracts for different age groups, it invites kids to keep track of what they read and awards them for books they have read.

This year's theme is "One World, Many Stories" and features special reading events that showcase books and reading all over the planet — from a to a .

Ellen Kieta, the library's community relations specialist, said the global theme was one chosen by a consurtium of libraries nationwide that organize summer reading programs.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Registration for the summer reading program begins June 2. You can register online at www.rhpl.org, at the library or on the bookmobile.
  • Kids are invited to read as much as they can until Aug. 9, the closing date of the program.
  • Any child from birth through age 12 who lives in Rochester, Rochester Hills or Oakland Township is invited to participate.
  • There's a separate reading program for teens ages 13 to 18. (They have to read five books to claim a prize and earn a ticket to a special summer reading finale in August.)
  • Kids must have their own library card to register.
  • Yes, there's ice cream again this year. The popular , an event that officially kicks off the summer reading season, is planned for 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday, June 21.

And did you know? There's an adult summer reading program, too. Its theme this year is "Novel Destinations," and, like the kids' program, will focus on books set in places around the world. (There are prizes for this program, too).
