Long Meadow and University Hills elementary schools have been awarded grants from Recyclebank, the city's recycling incentive program. Residents can donate their accumulated recycling "points" to either of the schools through March 15; Recyclebank will give the schools $1 for every 250 points donated — up to $2,500. Part of the money will be matched by a Domtar, a national paper company.

Long Meadow plans to use the funds to purchase a recycling center for the school and put recycling containers in each classroom. University Hills plans to use the funds to help build an outdoor classroom.

Nationwide, hundreds of schools applied for the grants; 27 schools were selected. The two Rochester Hills schools were the only Michigan schools selected. See the full list here.

"If you are wondering if you will ever use your points, and if you want to do something good for the community, these two schools would certainly appreciate those donations," said Mayor Bryan Barnett.

Last year, Brooklands Elementary School benefited from a Recyclebank grant; they planned to use the $5,000 they received for an outdoor classroom project.
