Funeral Wednesday for Stoney Creek Grad Andrew Singler

He was killed Saturday near Michigan State University, where he was a student.

A funeral is planned for Wednesday for Andrew Singler, a 2008 Stoney Creek High School graduate who died Saturday in Lansing.

Singler, a 23-year-old nutritional sciences student at Michigan State University, was stabbed by someone he knew at his apartment Saturday morning, according to police statements and news reports.

On Monday afternoon, an 18-year-old Okemos teen — whom Singler knew — was charged with murder in connection with his death, according to the Lansing State Journal.

Singler "died tragically and needlessly," his obituary states. He was set to graduate this spring from Michigan State and then continue to dental school. 

On Monday, Singler's friends and family remembered him as a good-hearted guy who will be missed.

The investigation

At 4:13 a.m. Saturday, police in Meridian Township, located next to East Lansing, responded to a "subject that received a life-threatening injury" in the 6200 block of Rothbury Way, according to a news release. 

Singler was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. 

The memories

Singler was a musician and a soccer player with a "ridiculous and contagious laugh," according to a report in The State News, the campus newspaper for Michigan State. Read more memories of Singler here. 

On the Rochester Patch Facebook page, Stoney Creek teacher Cara Lougheed was among those expressing their disbelief: "This is just horrible. Andrew was a very sweet young man. He will be missed terribly."

"He was loved and admired by hundreds and hundreds of friends who have chosen to remember him with all of their messages on Facebook," his obituary stated.

Singler is survived by his parents, Reeder and Janis Singler, as well as brothers Ryane, Matthew and Reeder and sister Aryn. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles and a grandma, Helen Russell. 

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Pixley Funeral Home in Rochester. The funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Rochester.
