Festival of the Hills Brings on the Fireworks Tonight in Rochester Hills

The festival starts at 6 at Borden Park.

It's a tradition that's billed as the state's second-largest fireworks show. It's the  at  in Rochester Hills and it's tonight.

Here's what you need to know before you go:

  • The festival officially begins at 6 p.m., but guests will start arriving early this morning to set up their spots. Don't worry — Borden Park is spacious and there's lots of room to set down your picnic blanket and chairs.
  • Speaking of blankets and chairs, they are permitted in the park during the show. So are coolers and wagons and any kind of picnic food you think to bring. But here are the things that aren't allowed: pets, alcohol, sparklers or other fireworks, open fires or any grill except for one that is fueled by gas.
  • There's lots to do besides watch the fireworks. There are bounce houses and other games for kids, plenty of food concessions and live music while you wait. There's also a playground, among other park amenities.
  • The fireworks begin at 10:06 p.m. They are set to music and launched from a spot on the southeast corner of the park. There's really not a bad seat in the house. This year, Wolverine Fireworks is putting on the show, which is expected to feature a few surprises.
  • Plan ahead for parking and traffic. Handicap parking is available at the Hamlin Road entrance to the park. Otherwise, plan to walk. Parking spots in the neighborhoods around Borden Park typically fill up shortly after 6 p.m. Carpool if you can.

Did we mention the festival is free? It's true. For a glimpse at what the festival is all about, see .

Where else can you view these fireworks... without getting super close to the park?

The music will be mostly provided by FM 105.1 FM (Magic). As far as other viewing spots -- we have heard people suggest the parking lot at Avon/Rochester Road and a few spots in Troy; check out our Facebook page (search Rochester Patch) to see what others have been suggesting over the past few days.

Tonight's band is "Mel Ball and Colours" They played our event last year and were very well received. We will also have strolling entertainment provided by the Detroit Piston DrumLine as well as a Barbershop Quartet, Hope to see you there tonight.
