Caption this, Rochester: What's Missing From This Downtown Photo?

We're four days into the Main Street Makeover and already the trees, lights and parking meters are gone.

For fans of downtown Rochester, this streetscape image may be bittersweet: crews are busy taking out trees and other embellishments of our downtown to get ready for the real work to begin.

So here are your most beloved shops and restaurants, seemingly uncovered — at least for now.

The rebuilding of Main Street officially began this week. It will continue throughout the summer and when it's finished, the road will be new and so will the trees, lights and other decor.

What a ghost town...

I loved those trees. Miss the days when they used to be our big bright light show. I am sure what is going to be will be nice, but those trees were part of my Rochester.

I agree with J. Schira. I thought the white lights on all of the trees on Main Street at Christmas were so much prettier than the Big Bright Light Show which is so tacky.

I watched them remove a tree on Wednesday and wondered, with today's technology, why they couldn't "transplant" the trees to another location.

I believe the clear cutting of the trees is more about cost and project timing. To transplant them would cost more money and take more time. Trees on Main Street have come and gone many times over the years and they will be again someday. I think that now is a great time to take stock of the overall look of the town and its buildings. Maybe some changes on the store fronts need to be made, now that we can see them more clearly.

Will we be able to walk across Rochester Road to the other while shopping?
Kristin Bull (Editor) April 06, 2012 at 02:32 PM
Yes, Sandy -- you will be able to cross the road at different locations. And all shops will remain open during the construction.

Landscapelessness for now... beauty yet to come!

Another transition of change coming to the vibrant town of Rochester! Proud of it's past, but excited for the future!

Hope new trees are part of the redo of Rochester. I noticed it yesterday and thought the streetscape looked naked.

What's missing? Parking meters. They are gone; never to return.

Love, it, Linda!
