The Mint Julep: Start It Now for Weekend Enjoyment

The real winner of the Kentucky Derby is this time-tested drink.

Hello, Rochester! As we prepare to head to the Churchill Downs in Kentucky we have to master this refreshing drink of the Derby.

Well, actually this drink has been around for over 200 years, and promoted at the Derby since 1838. Traditionally served up in a chilled silver cup, most places use a frosted glass. But for our case in the RV, the Red Solo Cup will do just fine.

To get the optimum flavor we want to start this a day or two in advance with our infused simple syrup: equal parts of water and sugar; for every 2 cups use 7 good size sprigs of mint (just rough-chop the mint).

Now, bring the water and sugar and mint to a boil; make sure all sugar has dissolved, let cool in the refrigerator over night. You can also make this up to a week in advance.

Now, get your favorite Kentucky Bourbon (Woodford Reserve is mine).

In a frosted glass or cup mix 1 ounce of the mint syrup, crushed ice to the top of the glass, 2 ounces bourbon and a splash of water. Stir well and top with a fresh sprig of mint.

You can also substitute basil for mint — talk about refreshing!

Or, use your mint syrup in some sweet tea. And if you want to kick up your sweet tea add a splash of your favorite vodka.

Please drink responsibly and enjoy!
