With Chips, on Tacos and More: A Guide to Lenten Fish Fare in Rochester

For some residents, Friday means fish for 40 days.

For some Rochester residents, Lent means Fish Fridays, and our local restaurants are more than accommodating. Here are just a few options for dinner tonight.

Lenten Fish Fry at Rochester Community House

Every Friday from now until April 22, the Knights of Columbus host a Fish Fry at . The dinner runs from 5-7:30 p.m. and the menu includes:

  • Fried or baked fish
  • French fries
  • Cole slaw
  • Rolls
  • Coffee or juice.

Macaroni and cheese is an alternative. Baked potato and dessert are offered for $1 more. The cost for an adult meal is $8 and $5 for children 12 and under. Carry out is available.

O'Connor's Public House

My husband loves the fish and chips at but I am partial to their wild mushroom & shellfish bisque. With a base of brandy, butter and cream, filled with mushrooms and shellfish and topped with even more shellfish, it's hard to imagine this soup as a Lenten sacrifice.

Fish and chips are $12.59.  A cup of bisque is $4.59 and a bowl is $5.59.

Miguel's Cantina

I'm not a huge fish eater, but I do love my fish tacos. Fortunately, they're available all over town, from to and everywhere in-between (yes, even our Irish pub O'Connor's serves them). On a recent Friday I tried the fish tacos at . The fresh slices of avocado and extra lime made them a delight. You can order two for $9.95 or three for $11.95.

Cheese enchiladas are another favorite, whether it's Lent or not. At Miguel's you can have them served with your choice of enchilada sauce or salsa verde. They are two for $8.95 or three for $10.95.

Chomp

You may think of on Main Street as a lunch place, but they're open until 9 p.m. on Friday. Whether you're going for lunch or dinner, they offer some great Lenten fare, both traditional (clam chowder and shrimp tacos) and nontraditional (fresh crab rolls and veggie Reuben).

Give Thanks Bakery

Finally, get your weekend started right with Hot Cross Buns from . These old-world treats are filled with two kinds of raisins (golden and dark), spices and lemon and orange zest. Of course they're topped with a cross of white icing. They are available on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and come April 23rd, they'll be gone until next year. So get them while they're hot! They're $1.50 apiece.
