Taco Bell Approved at Walton and Livernois

It will be built this year near the Mobil gas station.

Taco Bell will build a second Rochester Hills location, near the Mobil gas station on the corner of Walton Boulevard and Livernois Road.

Rochester Hills City Council approved a Conditional Land Use permit on Monday night for the restaurant to build a drive-thru in the empty lot that's less than a five-minute walk from , near .

The approval follows two months of review by city planning commissioners, who had expressed concerns about traffic flow and pedestrian accesibility to and near the site.

Taco Bell representatives addressed those concerns: the restaurant will now have a one-way parking lot and a sidewalk will allow pedestrians to walk from Taco Bell to the nearby Kroger or other shops.

Taco Bell will be accessible through the existing driveways in the shopping center; there will not be access into the Taco Bell parking lot directly from Walton Boulevard.

Bill Beckett, a representative of the restaurant, said he has been asked why Taco Bell is going into that spot rather than another, bigger spot on that corner: the site of the former Big Boy that was razed last year.

"Taco Bell has been looking in this area for the past several years, and they did look at the Big Boy site but it was not made available to them at the time," Beckett said. "This particular site has been a year in the works. It fits the needs. It's a wonderful location for Taco Bell."

According to a report accompanying the site plan, the restaurant will be built starting this summer with an opening planned for late fall.

where ther any concerns about taco and the high school across?

No concerns about this were expressed at the meeting last night, Lynn.

I feel that a Taco Bell will provide jobs for a few of the high school kids and perhaps a late night hang out as well. There isn't much around for teens in that area aside from Panera or BWW. I am still not sold on the location because of the traffic turning left into Kroger and the traffic turning left into BWW and how many head on collisions I have avoided there. Maybe they will need to restrict the left turns at either one of those two entrances. I am also hoping they plan on building steps down from the sidewalk on Walton to the restaurant. If you look at the site, the only way to that spot currently is to walk down the drive that leads to Kroger or across the parking lot behind the gas station from Livernois.

Good point about the jobs, David; we should have mentioned that Taco Bell said it would employ between 35-40 part-time or full-time workers -- from high school kids at entry-level positions to management-level personnel.

You can never have too many Taco bells! Plus business will boom during the school year! I mean look at wendys... Personally I would never go there but it was so conveinent that I would go there twice a week senior year! Everyone loves Taco bell so its a win win for everyone! +1 for Rochester!

Agreed! You can never have too many Taco Bells. I don't go there much anymore, but it's a nice late night option that I much prefer over most (if not all) other fast food places.

I'm not sure I see any negative here? It's a commercial intersection on three of the four corners, with the other being the high school parking lot. The other Taco Bell is waaay down Rochester, so not really convenient, and there's only 1 other fast food place (Wendy's). Win.

I cannot picture how it will fit in that little spot. I am waiting to see it.

For traffic reasons I am not sold on the location. I hope city council in a year from now doesn't regret their decision. The old Big Boy site would of been perfect!

When is construction starting for this restaurant?

What a horrible location. It's literally "in a hole". The Kroger parking lot is congested enough with the added "Panera" strip mall part. I won't be going there to get tacos with their "35% Beef" filling.

Rochester Hills and the landlord of that parcel must be desperate for revenue(s). The additional traffic will not be good in the area nor is the close proximity to the high school. That is not a the area to bring in a Taco Bell. Why not in the Hamlin M59 area where there is plenty of space in that parking lot strip mall? If not, the Tienken Rochester Rd. strip mall on the east side both of those sites afford better traffic flow---unless of course Taco Bell wants to market to the high school students across the street and sees them as a "captured" readily available market due to proximity.
