Rochester Hills Pet Supplies Store Gives Tips on Choosing Right Dog Food

Cindy DiMatteo tells what to look for when shopping for dog food.

With so many varieties on store shelves, it can be a challenge for some dog owners to find the right dog food for their favorite pooch.

Cindy DiMatteo of The Urban Dog, 1432 N. Rochester Road in Rochester Hills, hopes that by using her general guidelines, dog owners can have an easier time finding a tasty, nutritious meal for their pet.

DiMatteo said to avoid corn, soy or wheat as food ingredients, as they offer little to no nutritional value for the dog. She said to look for reliable sources of protein as the primary ingredients listed on the back of the bag.

While some premium dog foods carry a steeper price tag than their big-box store counterparts, DiMatteo said the higher-end brands offer a more concentrated offering of important nutrients, meaning dogs can eat in smaller portions. This, she said, also equals less waste.

DiMatteo also said that when available, try to switch flavors of dog foods, provided they're within the same brand. This, she said, can help prevent food allergies later in life and will keep dogs from getting bored with their food.
