If you wanted to open your own business, where would you start?
Chris Masson, owner of All American Pet Resort, started by looking around at businesses that impressed him.
One such business was where he took his boxer, Gordie, for doggie day care and boarding.
"Even though I live in Rochester, I would make the drive down to Royal Oak so my dog could go to All American Pet Resort," Masson said. "Gordie is like a family member to us so it was important that he was somewhere we could trust."
As a dog owner Masson was impressed with total transparency of the operation and the cleanliness.
As a potential franchise owner Masson liked that it was a business both locally and family owned.
It was a winning combination: he had found his business.
Last April, Masson and his wife, Megan, bought the building at 2736 Product Drive to open a Rochester Hills location of All American Pet Resort.
That wasn't the only major change happening in their lives.
"The title company had to go to Beaumont Hospital to have our paperwork signed," Masson explained. "My wife had just given birth to our twin boys."
All American Pet Resort opened for business the week before Thanksgiving.
Health, safety and exercise
From the double washing of every bowl to a state-of-the-art air filtration system, the health of All American pets is a top priority.
"Everything in here is a hard surface for easy cleaning," Masson said. "The floors are heat-sealed with a patented antimicrobal urethane. Each suite sits on a trench drain and are silicone to the floor so there is no cross- contamination. We have four dump stations that go directly into the sewer system."
When it comes to pet care at All American, Masson's standards are easy to define. "It has to pass the test of 'That's what I would want for Gordie.' "
In fact, Gordie is there every day. He, along with other All American Pet Resort guests, gets to enjoy a 2,000-square-foot outdoor play area with sport turf, as well as an indoor play area with cushioned flooring.
"Our dogs have two group play times during the day and are taken out five times a day," Masson said. "Exercise is important to us."
Masson said one of the huge benefits of the franchise was its dedication to and knowledge of safety and sanitation.
Smile, you're on webcam!
If you've ever wondered what your dog does all day, All American Pet Resort has your answer. With seven dedicated and unrestricted webcams, pet owners can always see what their dog is doing at All American Pet Resort.
"We believe in transparency," Masson said. "We have a lot of windows throughout the building to see into our puppy room and geriatric room. There's also an observation deck over the main kennel."
All American Pet Resort is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week so pets are never left alone.
"We take all dogs and can handle any type of medication," Masson said.
In addition to boarding and day care, All American Pet Resort also offers full-service grooming and training classes.
"I found a business that is family-oriented and fulfills a need," Masson said. "I found something I can have a passion for."
