Best of Around Town: A Look at Rochester's Breakfast Menu

While Around Town Laura is on vacation, we're revisiting some of her favorite restaurants. On today's menu: breakfast!

Around Town Laura is taking a week off. While she's relaxing (or slacking), we'll revisit her favorite Rochester restaurants with excerpts of some past columns. Today we tackle the most important meal of the day: breakfast!

Breakfast on the west side of town

We know you love the crepes at , and we've seen you in line for doughnuts at 's. But let's chat for a few about early morning eats on the other side of town.

Tucked in the corner of the 's plaza at Walton and Adams,  (the former Pic-A-Deli Café) offers a simple breakfast menu served by a welcoming staff. Everything is homemade, from the fresh-squeezed juice to the breakfast burritos, quiche and toast.

Ahhhh, toast.

Let's pause here to talk about the toast.

Bread is baked in the house every morning. It is sliced thick in flavors such as dill rye, asiago sourdough and pumpernickel. (The whole wheat is a personal favorite.)

If you prefer your baked goods a little sweeter, the selection of fresh-baked muffins will hit the spot. The choices change daily but could include chocolate raspberry, apple, blueberry and, if you're very lucky, cinnamon strudel muffin. Delish!

This just in! Half-Day Café is extending its Sunday hours from 6 a.m.-3 p.m., beginning March 6; sounds like the perfect spot for a birthday lunch.

Just what Grandma ordered

It's crowded, chaotic and pretty loud, but the food is fantastic — just like Grandma's house!

Okay, maybe  offers a few more tables than your grandma's dining room (it has 10), but the quality and quantity of its homemade fare would surely get Granny's stamp of approval.

My favorite is the Baked Creme Brulee French Toast. (I get it every time.) It's so sweet, you won't even need the warm syrup. The side of Canadian bacon is a nice salt-to-the-sweet touch.

My egg-loving hubby always goes for the special omelet of the day. On this particular day, it was asparagus, spinach, portabella mushrooms and Swiss cheese.

And just like any nice grandma would do, The Downtown Cafe will make orders in child-size proportions. (The cafe will even add chocolate chips to pancakes.)

So next weekend, if you're feeling a little homesick and a lot hungry, eat at The Downtown Cafe. But get there early, there's usually a wait. Grandma's one popular lady!

And if you don't believe me, trust the Patch readers: The Downtown Cafe came in second place in our last month!
