Hopeless Romantics: Rochester Hills Girl's Anti-Valentine Ballad is For You

Listen and watch as Olivia Millerschin performs her latest single, "Screw Valentine's Day."

A 17-year-old Rochester Hills singer-songwriter has a message for all the lonely hearts out there.

We don't need your made-up holiday.

That's a line from the chorus of Olivia Millerschin's new single, "Screw Valentine's Day," a song that she said speaks to the "single-status, hopeless romantics, looking for love in the wrong place."

Millerschin, a senior at Adams High School, has teamed up with Teton Guitars in a guitar giveaway sweepstakes (visit www.oliviamillerschin.com of become a Facebook fan to enter to win.)

Millerschin is a familiar musical voice at local venues: she performs regularly at Hepburn's Crepe and Coffee, Caribou Coffee, The Clansman Gaelic Pub in Lake Orion and Goldfish Tea in Royal Oak. She was part of the summer concert series at The Village of Rochester Hills last summer and performed in downtown Rochester during the Hometown Christmas Parade last year.

She performs with Matt Heim, also an Adams student, and Johnny Posada, of St. Clair Shores.

"Screw Valentine's Day" will be one of 10 original songs that will be part of her first full-length album, set to release next month. The video was filmed around Rochester: you'll see scenes from the Onyx Ice Arena and the Village. A scene inside the former Maggie Moo's ice cream shop stars Olivia's grandparents.

Erin Millerschin, Olivia's mom, said her daughter has been taking voice lessons since she was 9 and writing music since she was 13. She attended Musson Elementary School and Van Hoosen Middle School. She wrote "Screw Valentine's Day" last year after she had broken up with a boyfriend. "She walked into the family room with her ukelele and said 'Do you want to hear a song I just wrote?'" Erin Millerschin said.

This weekend Olivia will perform at Amplyfi in Los Angeles; the Millerschins will be on the west coast visiting a potential college choice.

"I consider my successes to be that I have been able to continue to do well in school and balance a hectic performance schedule to work toward my end goal: to make a living writing and singing music that appeals to people," Olivia writes on her website, adding that someday she hopes to open a music and performance school in Detroit.
