Visitors to Rochester Hills' city offices might be able to absorb some culture while perusing the grounds surrounding the building.
A reproduction of Canaletto's The Piazza San Marco (Saint Mark's Square), part of the DIA's Inside|Out art reproduction series, was installed Wednesday and now greets visitors to the city hall.
Inside|Out brings reproductions of historically important works of arts to communities around Metro Detroit.
A sign alongside the reproduction tells the background of the work:
"What mementos do you collect when you travel? In the 1700s, wealthy tourists brought back paintings to remind them of their trips, like postcards—big, expensive postcards. The artist Canaletto captures the central hub of Venice, complete with vendors selling cloth from collapsible tents that are much like today's t-shirt stands."
