A sign alongside the reproduction tells the background of the work:
"What mementos do you collect when you travel? In the 1700s, wealthy tourists brought back paintings to remind them of their trips, like postcards—big, expensive postcards. The artist Canaletto captures the central hub of Venice, complete with vendors selling cloth from collapsible tents that are much like today's t-shirt stands."
