Rochester Ranks Among Michigan's Wealthiest ZIP Codes

Rochester ranks fifth in state.

new list from the Washington Post ranks Rochester as having one of the wealthiest ZIP codes in Michigan.

At No. 5 in the state, 48306 in Rochester has a median household income of $118,146 with 60 percent of adults college graduates, according to the Post. Metro Detroit cities rounded out the top 5 "Super ZIPs" in the state, including Novi, Huntington Woods, Franklin and Troy.

The 48307 ZIP code of Rochester and Rochester Hills reports 47 percent of adults as college grads and the average household income is $66,640, according to michiganradio.org.

The growing number of people living in Super Zips here is redefining and reshaping the region, turning modest inner-suburb neighborhoods into upscale enclaves and outer-suburb farmland into sprawling housing developments, often gated.

Yet many who live in these rapidly evolving communities do not think of themselves as rich or elite. The cost of living, particularly for housing, eats up a large chunk of the two incomes it typically takes to afford a comfortable home in a good school district.
