Rochester Native Killed in Navy Yard Shootings

Michael Arnold, 59, was among 13 victims in a mass shooting Monday in Washington.

A retired Navy captain who grew up in Rochester is one of the casualties of a mass shooting Monday at the Washington Navy Yard.

Michael Arnold, 59, of Lorton, Va., had just visited Michigan for Labor Day to visit his 80-year-old mother Patricia, according to WDIV.

Arnold is one of 13 victims in the shootings, which occurred at The Navy Yard, a large complex in Southeast Washington where about 3,000 civilians and military personnel report each day from homes in the District and large swaths of Virginia and Maryland.

Arnold's uncle, Steve Hunter, of Rochester, told WDIV that his nephew worked at the Navy Yard on a team that designed vessels such as the USS Makin Island, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship used by the Marine Corps.

Jeff Bennett, a vice president at LMI, told The Washington Post that Arnold "was just a solid, solid citizen ... great American."

Authorities have identified the Navy Yard shooter as Aaron Alexis, 34. There was no known motive, the police chief said. The shooting was centered at the Navy Yard's Building 197.

Arnold is survived by his wife of more than 30 years, Jolanda, and two grown sons, Eric and Christopher.
