Rochester Hills Recognizes Diversity at Diwali Proclamation

Rochester Hills and the Hindu America Foundation celebrated diversity Oct. 14 during a proclamation by the city for Diwali, a significant Hindu festival popularly known as a festival of lights.

At the event, Padma Kuppa of the Hindu America Foundation spoke on the importance of recognizing the diversity in the community and the acceptance that the Rochester Hills City Council showcased by highlighting an important holiday for the Hindu community, according to Kuppa.

Diwali generally comes at the end of October or early November. It's a festival that Hindus, Sikhs and Jains celebrate, and the spiritual meaning behind it is "the awareness of the inner light."

The event was the first of its kind in Michigan for the foundation, which will hold similar events today in Troy and Ann Arbor.
