The Cuban Missile Crisis: A Film and Discussion Series with Professor Gregory Sumner

October 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the most dangerous showdown of the Cold War. To reflect on this event and consider its relevance for today, the Rochester Hills Public Library hosts Professor Greg Sumner for a viewing and discussion of the acclaimed film Thirteen Days, on Tuesday, October 9 and Tuesday, October 16 at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  The film Thirteen Days details the challenges President Kennedy faced in confronting Soviet aggression and managing the “hawks” in his own government. Attendees will be encouraged to share their memories of that harrowing time, when the world seemed on the brink of a nuclear conflagration.

Dr. Sumner, professor of 20th Century American History at the University of Detroit Mercy, will introduce and facilitate the two-evening film and discussion program.

Registration is required and open to those with a Rochester Hills Public library card. To register go to the Events Calendar at www.rhpl.org or call 248-656-2900. The Rochester Hills Public Library is located in downtown Rochester two blocks east of Main Street off of University Drive on Olde Towne Road. For more information, please call 248-650-7124.
