The 15th Annual Lobster Boil Was A Great Success

The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club is grateful to all of the community members who came out to support their 15th annual Lobster Boil on Saturday, September 28th. The event was a great success, selling more than 1500 lobsters!

The live New England lobsters were flown in fresh early Saturday morning and members of RJWC cooked, wrapped and had the lobsters hot and ready for customers at the Older Persons’ Commission drive-thru site.

“Customers pre-ordered their lobsters and then they just drive up to the OPC at their chosen time and their lobsters are given to them!  They don’t even have to get out of their car,” said Cyndi Toupin, co-chair of this year’s Lobster Boil. “And, if you happened to miss out on ordering your lobsters this year, make sure to mark your calendar for the last Saturday in September each year!” Toupin chaired the event with club members Pam Olesen and co-chairs Noelle DuBois and Kimberlie Stellman.

The club members also received help from Boy Scout Troop #60 who came again this year to help set up and tear down the event site.

Proceeds from this years’ Lobster Boil went to benefit Meadow Brook Hall, Rochester Area Neighborhood House, OPC and other local charities.

The funds from the Lobster Boil will help to support specific projects for the recipients;

In an effort to move individuals and families toward self-sufficiency, Rochester Area Neighborhood House provides financial assistance in the areas of shelter, utilities and transportation, food and clothing assistance as well as other basic needs to those clients who cannot meet these obligations without other means.  Funding received through the Rochester Junior Woman’s Club will allow Neighborhood House to assist local families in their efforts to move towards self-sufficiency.

Meadow Brook Hall will be using the funding for the Historical Interpretation of Danny Dodge’s Cabin and Workshop. In January 2013, Danny’s Cabin, the historic log cabin and workshop built for Danny Dodge, son of John and Matilda Dodge, was moved from its original site on the Meadow Brook farm property to a new site near Meadow Brook Hall’s Knole Cottage, the playhouse of Danny’s sister, Frances Dodge.  The objective of the project is to structurally restore the building back to its original design and purpose, to interpret its significance as an important historical asset on the Meadow Brook estate and to utilize the Cabin as a site to host educational and community programs including tours, youth programming and special events.

The club is also planning two other events to raise funds for their recipients. The first event will be held on January 25, 2014 at Meadow Brook Hall. The evening will include tours of the hall, a strolling gourmet dinner, music, dancing and a silent auction.  The club is also currently planning their annual “Spring Highlights” Luncheon and Shopping Boutique for March 29, 2014 at the Royal Park Hotel.

For over 50 years the Rochester Junior Woman's Club has been proud to contribute to the growth and vitality of the community through volunteer service and donation of funds to local charities and organizations. Since their inception, the Rochester Junior Woman’s Club has donated more than 1 million hours of community service and raised more than $820,000 to support the local community.
