Rochester Junior Woman's Club is looking for New Members

The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club (RJWC) is actively seeking new members! RJWC is a volunteer service organization which has been a part of the Rochester community for more than 50 years.

RJWC is committed to supporting numerous area charities and non-profit organizations through hands-on volunteering as well as fund-raising. Since its inception, the Rochester Junior Woman’s Club has more than 1 million hours of community service and raised more than $820,000 to support the local community.

Members of RJWC have helped found many institutions in the Rochester community; Rochester Community House, Crittenton Hospital, Rochester Hills Public Library, Rochester YMCA, Older Persons Commission (OPC) and the League of Women Voters all were started with the support of club members.

The group also provides hands on support to the Paint Creek Center for the Arts, Rochester Hills Museum at VanHoosen Farm including the annual Stonewall Pumpkin Festival, the Older Persons Commission, and Dinosaur Hill Nature Center. We also provide two scholarships annually through the Greater Rochester Community Foundation.

In addition, recent fundraisers have benefitted Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, Meadowbrook Center for Learning Differences, Paint a Miracle, Blessings in a Backpack, Rochester PTA Council’s Rachel’s Challenge Program and the Stoney Creek Schoolhouse Interpretation at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, Avon Players, Friends of Dinosaur Hill and Rochester Symphony Orchestra (RSO) in addition to an annual fundraiser for the Crittenton Hospital Auxiliary.

Proceeds from this year’s fundraising events will go to benefit two local organizations; Meadow Brook Hall and Rochester Area Neighborhood House.

Funding received through the Rochester Juniors Woman’s Club will allow Neighborhood House to assist local families in their efforts to move toward self-sufficiency. In their effort to move individuals and families toward self-sufficiency, Rochester Area Neighborhood House provides financial assistance in the areas of shelter, utilities and transportation, food and clothing assistance and other basic needs to those clients who cannot meet these obligations without other means.

Meadow Brook Hall will be using the funding for the Historical Interpretation of Danny Dodge’s Cabin and Workshop. In January 2013, Danny’s Cabin, the historic log cabin and workshop built for Danny Dodge, son of John and Matilda Dodge, was moved from its original site on the Meadow Brook farm property to a new site near Meadow Brook Hall’s Knole Cottage, the playhouse of Danny’s sister, Frances Dodge.  The objective of the project is to structurally restore the building back to its original design and purpose, to interpret its significance as an important historical asset on the Meadow Brook estate and to utilize the Cabin as a site to host educational and community programs including tours, youth programming and special events.

The club will be holding their 15th annual Lobster Boil on September 28, 2013 where live New England lobsters are flown in fresh and members of RJWC cook and wrap the lobsters and have them hot and ready as customers pick them up at the OPC drive-thru site! The lobsters are $18.00 each. Buy a baker’s dozen and get the 13th free! If you would like to order your lobsters today, or if you have any questions, please contact Karen at (248) 693-4178 or rochesterlobsterboil@yahoo.com or Cyndi at (248) 941-7991 or catoupin@comcast.net. You can also print out a Lobster Boil order form on the events page at www.rhpl.org./rjwc/.

The club is also planning two other events to raise funds for their recipients. The first event the club has planned to raise funds for the recipients will be held on January 25, 2014 at Meadow Brook Hall. The evening will include tours of the hall, a strolling gourmet dinner, music, dancing and a silent auction.  The club is also currently planning their annual “Spring Highlights” Luncheon and Shopping Boutique for March 29, 2014 at the Royal Park Hotel.
