RELAY FOR LIFE OF GREATER ROCHESTER INTRODUCES OUR 2014 COMMITTEE MEMBERS

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Greater Rochester is gearing up for another exciting year thanks to the efforts of the volunteer committee members.

Before any Relay For Life event, there is a team of community volunteers behind the scenes who are responsible for all aspects of the event, from set-up to tear-down and everything in between.

Heading the committee is Davd Thompson, who will chair the event along with the assitance of American Cancer Society representative Rachel Leas. Other committee members include; Enterrainment, Activities & Ceremonies Chair - Sam Riethmeier, Fundraising Chair - Rick Drummer, Luminaria Chair - Courtney Fortress, Mission Delivery Chair    - Bob Grace, Online Chair - Cheryl Satterhwaite, Publicity Chair - Lynn Marie Oates, Team Recruitment - Jill Jankowski and Team Retention & Mentoring Chair -Maureen Lietz.

Volunteer committee members enlist local buisnesses, civic groups, organizations, and anyone with an interest in the fight against cancer, to get involved with Relay for Life through sponsorship, donations, or participation in the event.

“Volunteers are truly the backbone of Relay For Life” said Dave Thompson, Event Chair of the event. “The committee members, team captains and participants are the ones that make this event happen every year.  Without their countless hours of volunteered time, it would not be the memorable event it is each year.”

The committee is still looking to fill a few volunteer positions including the Survivorship and Caregiver Chair. This position is responsible for planning all the day-of events for Survivors and Caregivers including a lunch, registers survivors and help to invite and recruit survivors to the event. As well as the Sponsorship Chair, this person would recruit local sponsorships in the community to help with the fundraising efforts for the Relay. Ideally this person would have good connections in the community and are willing to ask for donations. The Youth Engagement chair - this would be a person with connections in the schools and would be willing to start fundraising activity with in the schools for Relay for Life. And, a Logistics Chair – this would be someone who would help coordinate day of the event site functions.

This year’s Relay For Life of Greater Rochester will take place on June 21st at Hart Middle School begining at 9:00 a.m. and continuing through 9:00 a.m. on June 22nd.

As the American Cancer Society’s signature event, Relay For Life events have raised more than $3 billion for the fight against cancer. Teams of family, friends, and co-workers not only raise dollars and camp out overnight, but also participate in fun activities and ceremonies. In 2013, 40 teams participated raising over $136,528.00
