Spring Into....Giving Back

Spring is a time for fun...and we need to give shop local and enjoy our community. But, let's not forget that there are those in need and continue to give back to our local nonprofits!

Spring is a time when we start getting the itch to get outside, get involved and start connecting again. Whether your planning a brunch, getting ready for Mother's Day or planning graduation parties, we're ready for the end of the school-year and the start of summer!

But, what about those less fortunate? There are still children who will need help from volunteers and Blessings in a Backpack on weekends from now until June. We have neighbors and friends who take part in assistance from Rochester Area Neighborhood House and the Community Kitchen, just to name a few. There are women across metro Detroit who have received grants and aid from Assistance League, Junior Women's League and The Women's Fund. Our community nonprofits don't take a summer break, they are as busy as ever and need our support.

This week, I was speaking with one of the directors at Rochester Community House who reminded me of the empty pantry shelves in their giving kitchen. The needs of the community are great. Those of us who can give, need to give.

The next Community Kitchen Dinner is going to be on May 20 at the Rochester Community House. Sunday Dinners were launched in 2007 and help feed those in need with a fine dinner every month. The sponsor of this month's dinner is The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club.

There has been an increase in the number of requests for emergency food and consequently, their supply is low. "We are in need of just about any food item. Canned soups, fruits and spaghetti sauces are always in need. Peanut butter and crackers are also items that are needed," said Mary Lee Kowaczyk, Community House Director and Director of Community Kitchen.

It's important for us to shop local, stay in town during construction and give back to our local businesses, but it's also important to remember that there are people right in our backyards who can't shop, and may not be making their mortgage this month.

Another note, I'm working with a friend to raise funds for The Women's Fund through a Stella & Dot fundraiser. Just shop and purchase jewelry online or through me and 10% of your sale will go directly to The Women's Fund.
