I Have To Give Up My Pet

Giving up a pet is one of the hardest things anyone can have to do. Don't let your pet suffer- take it to a local shelter or rescue to give it a second chance at love.

Two year old Bernard (pictured) was brought into the Oakland Pet Adoption Center this afternoon, as an owner give up. Bernard became a resident of our shelter because he did not get along with his furry brother and sisters. As I watched the owner sign over their rights to him, I could see the upset and sadness in their eyes, and my heart broke for this dog.  In the situation where someone has to relinquish ownership of a pet, many assume that those who give up their pets are inhumane or cruel. While I will always advocate taking preventative measures initially to avoid such a situation, sometimes bringing an animal to the shelter/rescue is the best thing to do.

Bernard was fortunate that his family brought him to the shelter, where he has a much higher chance of being re-homed. Some pet owners in similar situations feel so pressured by the stigma associated with giving up a pet that they can’t bear to come to a shelter. These animals are often abandoned at a park or neighborhood where they are left to fend for themselves. Many of the animals picked up by the Oakland County Animal Control officers are results of this type of ‘give up’. Sometimes they don’t get picked up though; they are left in the wild where they are susceptible to illness, starvation and death.  No pet should have to deal with the loss of their family, and being thrown into the wilderness; they all deserve a second chance at love. Having to give up a pet can be heart wrenching, but bringing the pet to a shelter gives them that second chance. There is no shame in admitting you need help as pet owner, and shelters/rescues want to provide that help.

It is important to note that sometimes animals are given up because of health issues or aggression. These animals are not always able to be rehabilitated and re-homed. This should be taken into consideration for any pet owner considering relinquishing ownership.

Tough economic times, medical emergencies, and other catastrophic events are part of the myriad of reasons I see owner give ups on a daily basis.  Before you make the decision to give up your pet, consider this list for possible alternatives. While it’s hard for me to comprehend ever having to give up a pet, unfortunately it is a reality. Although I feel part of being a responsible pet owner includes having e a back-up and emergency plan for their pets, in the event that you have no other options, I urge that you do the responsible thing and bring them to a shelter.  Just like Bernard, his family may have not been able to keep him, but now he has a second chance with a new family, and beginning a new life.

Bernard is available for adoption and would love some visitors, so come and play with him today!
