Hello From a Pet Lover Like You

I'm blogging to be the voice of the voiceless and help people learn about animal welfare.

Hello everyone! Before I begin regularly blogging, I thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself. My name is Alexis Shull, and I love animals. I'm currently a furry mommy to two very special girls, McKenna (a 5-year-old pomeranian chihuahua mix) and Rylee (an 11-month-old Lab pup), pictured here!

Growing up, I always had pets in my home, from cockatiels to cocker spaniels. I strongly believe that every pet I’ve ever had was a member of my family. When I majored in communication and marketing at EMU, I didn’t expect to fuel that love for animals into a career. How amazing would it be to work (and play) with animals?! Well, somehow I lucked out, and became the marketing & public relations account coordinator for the Oakland Pet Adoption Center.

While I LOVE my job (having cuddly kittens as office assistance is a huge bonus!), I see many sad aspects to pet ownership and animal cruelty that I was not exposed to as just a pet owner. You want to believe that every animal is treated with respect and love, just as you would treat your own pets, but unfortunately that is just not the case. That is where the motivation for this blog came from.

I would like to serve as a voice to the voiceless, and help people learn the various aspects of animal welfare. There is so much information out there about responsible pet ownership, animal rescue and awareness. My blog will reflect on real life experiences I see in a shelter environment, and issues that I deal with regularly as a pet owner. I also want to be able to provide any insight on questions that I frequently hear from people, who often don’t realize the many roles an animal shelter plays.

I plan to post at least once a week, so expect a post from me very soon after this one. If you have any specific topics you'd like to hear about, please let me know in the comments.

I look forward to connecting with you!

Great idea! Looking forward to it. Could you please blog about spaying and neutering?

Hi Jennifer, thanks for the suggestion! I will definitely include that in one of my upcoming posts.

Please tell people to help get strays off the street - you don't have to keep them, just take pity on them and let them at least in your garage and feed them until you can get them to the Michigan Humane Society or another shelter. If we all tried to catch them and find homes for them or at least got them off the street, we could make a real dint in the stray population. Thanks for doing this blog.

What a great point, Cara! Totally agree with you on keeping homeless animals off the street. Sort of goes hand-in-hand with spaying/neutering to prevent animal overpopulation. Definitely plan to incorporate that in some posts. Thanks for the thoughts.

Hi Alexis, my wife and I work with N.B.S. Animal Rescue as dog fosters. We started last year and have fostered 16 dogs. It has been a very eye opening and rewarding experience. Thanks for blogging!
