More About Oakland University
Oakland University was founded in 1957 when Matilda Dodge Wilson donated her beautiful estate (including Meadowbrook Hall, now one of the largest house museums in the country) and $2 million to Michigan State University. Though the public university's sprawling rural campus technically straddles two cities (Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills), it uses a Rochester mailing address and has an official partnership with the city of Rochester. OU is also home to Meadow Brook Theatre and Meadow Brook Music Festival. Oakland University's motto, Seguir virtute e canoscenza, translates to "Seek virtue and knowledge." Its undergraduate students can choose from more than 120 undergraduate degree programs, including education, nursing, communications, counseling and business. OU also offers over 100 graduate and professional programs and certifications. OU has been classified as a Doctoral Research-Intensive University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is home to the William Beaumont School of Medicine and is an educational partner of the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Oakland University's NCAA Division I "Golden Grizzlies" athletic teams include women's and men's basketball, soccer, golf, swimming, track & field and cross country teams, and women's tennis, volleyball and softball teams.
