Explore an extraordinary visual legacy at fall art and photo exhibition at Oakland University

October 1, 2012: DAN ELDON was among a group of five journalists attacked by an angry mob during the Somali famine of 1993. He and three others were stoned to death.

Eldon, who died at 22, left behind a rich body of work — photos, journals, paintings and sketches — that pose considerations about war, peace, activism, and the ethics of reporting conflict.

Inspired by Dan’s life, his family chartered the Creative Visions Foundation to help others use media and art to create meaningful change in the world around them. The curated collection of Dan’s work, which recently began traveling the world, continues to reverberate with viewers. This October, it arrives at Oakland University.

THE JOURNEY EXHIBIT at OU features Dan’s work as a series of related events. All are free and open to the public. The artwork is on display in the Oakland Center Fireside Lounge and throughout the Oakland Room corridor, from October 9-30th.

Oakland University was founded in 1957 when Matilda Dodge Wilson donated her beautiful estate (including Meadowbrook Hall, now one of the largest house museums in the country) and $2 million to Michigan State University. Though the public university's sprawling rural campus technically straddles two cities (Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills), it uses a Rochester mailing address and has an official partnership with the city of Rochester. OU is also home to Meadow Brook Theatre and Meadow Brook Music Festival. Oakland University's motto, Seguir virtute e canoscenza, translates to "Seek virtue and knowledge." Its undergraduate students can choose from more than 120 undergraduate degree programs, including education, nursing, communications, counseling and business. OU also offers over 100 graduate and professional programs and certifications. OU has been classified as a Doctoral Research-Intensive University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is home to the William Beaumont School of Medicine and is an educational partner of the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Oakland University's NCAA Division I "Golden Grizzlies" athletic teams include women's and men's basketball, soccer, golf, swimming, track & field and cross country teams, and women's tennis, volleyball and softball teams.
