Hating on Brad Penny during this season for the Tigers is the equivalent of bemoaning a single cloud in the sky on an otherwise magical day when you don't have to work and you have a tee time waiting.
You’re looking for something negative in a sea of positives.
As of this writing, Penny is 10-10 with 5.07 ERA. His WHIP, if you’re into that sort of thing, is 1.53. He has struck out 71 batters this season, a mere 167 less than Justin Verlander.
He is, as the stats say he is, an average major league pitcher.
But what else would you expect out of a fifth starter?
In the 28 games he has started this season, the Tigers are 14-14. He has stayed healthy all season, and has been a reliable arm every fifth day.
There’s not much else you can ask from, historically speaking, the worst pitcher in your starting rotation.
But a couple of days ago, the Detroit News reported that Penny might not make the playoff roster. This was met with a roar (get it? Roar?) of approval from Tigers fans who expect all of their pitchers to win 23 games and throw 150 pitches every time they toe the rubber, I guess.
Have we grown cocky during this winning streak? Do we harbor an opposition to pitchers with sketchy facial hair?
I’m befuddled by this hatred for such an unimportant player on a team that has so many other positives to enjoy.
If you have the answer, leave it in the comments and enlighten me.

I'd like him to make the playoff roster and serve a bullpen role. The Tigers have a remarkable 1-2 punch with Verlander and Fister that could steal a series. Porcello and Scherzer have had good stuff lately, too. Penny is reliable enough to put in a bullpen role and Leyland can weed out any questionable relievers.

It seems like everyone always has to find something negative about a situation just so that they can be the first to tell everyone i told you so when that player screws up. Look at all the other teams in major league baseball and look at their 5th starters. They are probably all similar to Penny. Good article

I like the article, but it's not a matter of how he pitches, it's what happens when he pitches. We all know that he is not going to start any game in the playoffs, so normally I would be ok with him coming out of the bullpen. The problem with that, is why not give the roster spot to someone who could use the experience like Jacob Turner or even a fielding spot like Will Rhymes. Penny (and Porcello to an extent) have a problem with starting and allowing 3-6 runs in the first 5 innings. Look at the other end of the spectrum. If the Tigers do not come back in these past two starts, are we even arguing that he should be on the playoff roster. Two losses and he would be in the pen.

Furthermore, the ERA has risen in his past 10 games where he has posted a 6.31 ERA, and in 55 innings his WHIP is 1.79.

Detroit fans can be tough on their sports teams and players - always have and probably always will. Bad (sic) Penny is indeed bearing the brunt of much dissatisfaction about his performance but I agree with Adam that it is improving -- not everyone can be a Verlander! Bottom line: the Tigers continue to do well as a team and I look forward to the play-offs! As we said back in '68, "Sock it to 'em, Tigers!"

With Days of between games. I say Lets go with a 3 - Man Rotation ! "Lolich Won 3 Games in the 68 World Series."

Agreed with Adam. There is no need for Penny on the postseason roster. The Tigers will go with a 4 man rotation, and that is it. Penny has pitched in 317 games in his career, and 314 of them were as starts, so he is not a good option to come out of the pen. Plus teams usually go with 14 positional players, and only 11 pitchers, since there is no need for a 5th starter.
My best guess at postseason roster.
Positional (14): Cabrera, Martinez, Avila, Dirks, Ordonez, Jackson, Young, Santiago, Betemit, Kelly, Guillen, Peralta, Inge, and Raburn
Pitching (11): Verlander, Fister, Scherzer, Porcello, Valverde, Benoit, Coke, Schlereth, Perry, Below, Alburquerque

In my brother's words, "Brad Penny ain't worth a nickel." I have to agree - I've been underwhelmed by his performance on the mound all season. We don't need him in the playoffs - he wouldn't start anyway.

Bottom line.....We're spoiled now and have what it takes to be champs. We expect our pitchers to go out there & put on a good show most games and allow for some "off" games. There is nothing worse than a struggling pitcher in the first few innings. We hate playing catch up. It seems like that's what we do when Penny pitches. It get's on your nerves after awhile. Our guys are pretty good "as the comeback kids"...and even though Penny has won his fair amount, he just drags us down. As I said ...we're spoiled!;-)

Oh and another thing...He takes way too long in between pitches! grrrr..I know pitchers have their own style, but he puts u to sleep (and our outfielders ), for crying out loud. If the pitches were worth waiting for, I wouldn't complain as much.
