Tis’ the season...to plan your mid-winter getaway!

I woke up this morning and what did I see?  Snow!  My son’s first thought when he saw it, “Yay, we can build a snowman!”  My first thought, “I need to start planning our mid- winter getaway.”

When I was younger, I could appreciate all the fun that came along with winter:  making snowmen, sledding, snow ball fights and hot chocolate afterwards.  Now, since I’m “slightly” more advanced in age and have become a Mom, winter means something different.  It means planning an extra 20 minutes into our pre-departure routine. Fifteen minutes are normally spent finding and bundling my child into all necessary winter gear.  The remaining 5 minutes are spent wresting with the safety restraints on the car seat.  Those puffy coats can be a bit challenging when it comes to meeting U.S. safety standards.  (Keep in mind I only have 1 child, so multiply all above times by your total number of children.)  Winter also means my feet will not be warm and cozy even with my big fluffy winter socks. It means less sun and gray skies, which might make me a teensy bit grouchier than usual...just ask my husband.

My solution for my winter blues and worries:  a mid-winter getaway to someplace warm and sunny.  I imagine myself arriving into a destination surrounded by palm trees, being taken to my winter getaway oasis(a.k.a. hotel) and being greeted by warm smiling faces.  My westward facing hotel room with balcony overlooks the beautiful blue water and sand, making it the perfect location to watch a breathtaking sunset later in the day. Meanwhile, we get changed and head to the beach, stopping along the way for a frozen adult beverage...sans umbrella, of course.  I find a couple beach chairs close to the water, sit down and dig my toes into the warm sand. The warmth of the sun on my face is divine.  I exhale, start sipping on my drink and watch my son play in the sand and dig for “treasures”.  Yep, this is what a mid-winter getaway is all about, a couple days to relax and enjoy the sun. Upon my return to Michigan, I feel recharged and ready to tackle the second half of winter.  Could you use a mid-winter getaway?
