The Rochester Hills Public Library hosted Author Gordon Korman today. He has written over 60 books some of which include Swindle, The Titanic Series, The Everest Series as well as a couple 39 Clues books.
It was really a nice presentation, and Mr. Korman was a great storyteller. For the 80 or so people in attendance we were treated to some fun information regarding how to take everyday occurences and turn them into great stories!! I loved the fact that Mr. Korman's first book was actually a 7th grade story that he wrote for which he received a B+. From the nodding of the heads of some of the kids in attendance, it was clear that struck a chord with some of them.
After answering questions from the audience, Mr. Korman stayed to autograph the kids books as well as pose for photos. I liked the fact that many of the books he autographed looked well read!! It was also nice that there were a selection of new books that could be bought for those who may have been discovering Mr. Korman for the first time.
I have taken my boys to a handful of these Meet the Author presentations, and I never regret having spent the time to listen to these writers. I always feel like they are planting a seed in my boys minds as to "all the places you can go" if you just pick up a book.
On a side note: Mr. Korman lives on Long Island, New York. He mentioned that his kid's school was still without power and this was the 9th day for them out of school.
So thank you Gordon Korman for coming and talking to our kids when your mind was probably still in "Sandy" mode.
Thank you also to the Rochester Public Library for hosting this event. If you ever are on the fence as to should I take my kids to hear an author give a talk, you will never regret it, and I guarantee your kids will walk away having learned a little something.
