Hills Theater Circa 1976

Darlene Beaton Asam inspired me to do this illustration, the latest in my Hometown Rochester Project . In her words:

"I used to love walking downtown to meet all my friends from school. Sometimes we'd walk to Knapp's for fries & gravy and a coke. The Hills Theater was our weekend meeting spot; we would watch a movie and always stop at the Baskin Robbins afterwards to get an ice cream. If you were looking for anybody, you'd find them downtown at The Hills'.

I omited the store in between the Baskin Robbins because there was some debate what it was and I didnt think it was necessary for the vibe of the scene. =)

This is really fun. Who else remembers the theater?

When a new release came out, we would always drive slowly down main street to check out the line into the theatre. I always hoped I would see someone I knew standing in line that I could pass my money out through the car window to buy our tickets. (I know not very ethical....)

Way back, in winter coming down South Hill, you knew you made it back home when you saw the lights at night through the snow of the marquis, They use to be left on and were a beacon of sorts. Softly glowing and familiar. Many a first (and last) high school date took place there---sneaking in a little hand holding and an arm around the shoulder. Lot of first dates there for a lot of people in Rochester. Before that, it was the hot spot for those of us who were in grade school. We would go to the Saturday or Sunday afternoon matinee for the latest Disney or Elvis movie. I remember having to sit through Blue Hawaii twice because my sister couldn't get enough of Elvis. Extra butter pumped on your hot popcorn was never a problem. Sometimes we were lined up around the corner down Fourth St. for tickets. Knapp's was always ready for us after the movie ended -even if our date just ordered hot fries to share and a couple of cokes, not wanting the evening to end. It was magic on a Friday or Saturday night, just like in the movies,
