Your Guide to Rochester-Area Traffic on Brooksie Way Day
From Walton to Avon to Tienken to Adams, here's when your favorite roads will close and open on Sunday.

From the Brookie Way website: "There will be a ONE-WAY traffic lane at the entrance to the sub. The eastbound lane of Tienken between Brewster and Brookwood will be separated by construction barrels. There will be a police officer stationed at Brewster and Brookwood. When a vehicle appears at the subdivision entrance, the officer will direct the vehicle westbound on Tienken to Brewster, then southbound on Brewster. Conversely, when a vehicle wants to get into the subdivision, it must get to Brewster and Tienken from the south and then will be directed eastbound by the officer." (I think maybe they meant to say the officer would be stationed at Tienken and Brookwood?)

At the risk of being labeled a party-pooper... this is really annoying.
My home is also boxed-in by this event.
And beyond that... add into the mix the awful planning by the Road Commission, City, State Department of Transportation (and whatever other agency needs to be added in part of the blame shifting game)
3 out of our 4 North-South routes are either closed or choked. Rochester, Livernois, and Crooks are severely impacted, leaving only Adams. Now it appears that the intersections of Adams and Walton will be closed from 7:30am to noon?
Great.

True: the best way to travel north-south will be Squirrel or Dequindre on the edge of town — or, after about 9:15 a.m., Old Perch to Avon to Adams.

Ok I get that we can get out of the sub and it puts us on Brewster heading south. But that heads you to Walton and Brewster which is also closed for the race if I am not mistaken. Cannot head towards Adams on Walton. Cannot Head east on Walton to Old Perch.

Walton East and Old Perch will be open by around 8:45 - 9:15am. Avon Road is about 2.4 miles into the race so even walkers should be clear by that time.
I am running this event for the first time this year and live off of Avon. While it has been an inconvenience, it is not the end of the world. This is one of the top scenic 1/2 Marathon races in the US. http://www.active.com/running/Articles/Scenic-Fall-Half-Marathons.htm

No matter what anyone tells us about this race, we are "boxed" in on Sunday morning. Did you ever try talking to the cops who are working this event? Not nice. Why don't they run this race somewhere else and leave our sub-divisions alone. Kristin, apparently you don't live in an area that is affected by this race.

Hi, Barbara. Normally I don't like to get personal, but in response to your assumption, I do live in one of the affected subdivisions. Although I will be walking to and from OU to cover the race on Sunday morning for Patch, my family has to be across town at 10 a.m. Like many local residents, we are trying to map out a plan.

Like Kristin, my house is also boxed in by the event, as is my mom's condo. In order to be able to cover the Brooksie Way with Kristin this year, I'll have to leave home before they shut down the road at 7:30am. True, it's an inconvenience for some, but it's only one Sunday morning a year, and the race raises a LOT of money for many wonderful local organizations. :)

I agree the cops in the past have been less than helpful. I forgot about Chichester. They have a road closed as well and I believe there only exit is Tienken. But there side is reserved for the race. Year after year its the same thing.

Oh, for pete's sake people! It's ONE DAY in your lives to be inconvenienced! Get over it! This is an event that, I have no doubt, brings others from outside our community here and perhaps after the event they might even eat a local establishment or shop or whatever, helping local business and showing off our great community! To me, it's worth ONE DAY of inconvenience!

Yes, many of us have to change our Sunday morning plans, leaving home earlier than usual. But there are lots of situations that arise throughout the year that might mean a change of plans. Let's also remember that this race raises money for local charities -- another reason to try to embrace it. One morning of inconvenience actually helps many in need -- offer it up!

Never said I was against the race in Rochester. However historically the Brooksie Way has not been good neighbors. I understand what it brings in and what it supports. I am not trying to sound like "Not in my back yard". Why don't they try and alter the course. Try using more of the wonderful trail systems we have in Rochester/Rochester Hills. Currently out of the 13.2 miles the race uses 2 miles of the trail system.

I think the trails presents many problems, and is in the Brooksie course only after the runners thin out. Our trails are too linear . . ."out and back" does not make for a fun race, and you need very wide to start. Also, OU offers the best parking in the area of a large event, I believe.

It's becoming painfully obvious that there is a segment of the community that simply refuses to tolerate any inconvenience to their way of life. As I commented on yesterday [http://rochester.patch.com/articles/register-by-midnight-tonight-for-sunday-s-brooksie-way], it's disingenuous for residents to complain about road closures on a Sunday morning when there are events in our community that result in much more substantial traffic delays (I'm looking at you Big Bright Light Show). While it may add five more minutes on to my commute home in December, I'm willing to accept the inconvenience for the pleasure of living in a dynamic city.
I understand the race on Sunday will adversely affect certain residents along the route. But I see it as a small price to pay to live in an area that encourages community involvement, social activity and the promotion of local attractions.

lets agree its a worthwhile cause. That aside...They could still have this event and eliminate alot of the issues by planning the course in a way that is less disruptive on the lives of the SAME people every year. It is ridiculous that someone is trapped in their own subdivision. No other event anyone has mentioned comes even close to creating that situation. Just plan it better ....change the course every year. Lets give everyone the opportunty to experience the fun,....

We live in one of the affected neighborhoods. Our family has chosen every year to make the most of a bad situation and go out and cheer on the runners and enjoy the atmosphere of a major event running past our house. However, we are a church going family and we don't appreciate having a Sunday used for this event every year. We do not find it "family friendly" as so many have suggested as a beer keg is positioned every year near our house and beer is freely offered to the runners in our neighborhood. We do not see anyone checking fror ID - just people drinking beer and throwing cups on the ground. We also have noticed as people try to get out of the sub, the rudeness of the police officers. We have yet to hear one of the police officers speak nicely to people genuinely trapped within the neighborhood. We have many wonderful parks in the Detroit metro area which could handle this type of race well - Stoney Creek, Kensington...it would have been nice if the race organizers would have considered one of those especially this year with 3 major road closures already making it difficult for us to get anywhere within the Rochester area. I think it would have been nice if city council would talk with these neighborhoods that have been affected every year and find out how they could make this a better situation for all involved - we feel as if we have no say.

A beer keg and beer for runners?? Really? I think you should check it out a little closer . . . I know of no runners that would think of drinking during a race if that's what you are suggesting. More likely water . . . it's pretty customary for "locals" to get involved and offer free water. Now, after a race they may line up, but not during. It does sound however, that the race organizers need to do a better job of communicating and working with neighborhoods.

I can assure you that there is a beer keg located along the race route. It is NOT water. We have had heard the runners being offered the beer, the laughter about beer along the race route, and definitely recognize the smell and the keg. We have seen it 4 straight years and I can most assuredly say it is NOT water.

Sue, I just think this event is poorly organized all the way around. I did not realize until someone else gave the post about the littering, etc. I don't think a lot of people realize how poorly this is advertised in other communities like Lake Orion, etc. The reason I say this is because I live on the corner of Tienken and for hours I will see trucks, cars, motorcycles drive down to Adams only to have to turn around and head back west. Sometimes you will see the same vehicle try several times to come back and try again. I do hope the people who love this event and sponsors will read the posts on rochesterpatch.com. I can almost tell by some of the posts the people that never attend church on Sunday morning or any other time for that matter. Their religion is running. By the way Abiding Presence, tell me how to get to your church this Sunday.

Barbara -- THIS is what Abiding Presence was doing this morning during the race: http://rochester.patch.com/articles/rochester-hills-church-embraces-brooksie-way-with-flash-wave#photo-11501719. Today I was driving through The Village and I saw so many running families shopping our mall after picking up their packets at OU's Health and Wellness Expo. I am tired of being trapped on my street every year for this event! I have to get onto Avon Rd. at 8:30 am to get to work. Why can't the participants walk on the 2 perfectly good bike paths which are on both sides of Avon. I'd like the people who plan this location to be stopped on their way to work and told they can't pull out onto the road!

You said the "families are shopping the mall". What mall if the stores don't open "until noon". By the way, the traffic on Tienken is horrific. Cars are trying to go east and are constantly turning around because they cannot go through. They couldn't get through on Walton so they drove over to Tienken and guess what, can't cross Tienken. An AT&T truck, Sears delivery ,etc. For the runners this may be OK, but for others it is poorly organized for the community.

Seriously Barbara, 13 comments on this single subject? Not sure if this really impacted you as you must spend 90% of your time sitting on your PC complaining about something that really impacts people for 1/2 day at most. "Can't believe how intolerable the pretentious snobs of Rochester can be."--- don't know if you are using an "assumed" name, but everyone has a right to an opinion-to some, this race was problematic in view of some many road closures still going on in the area. For others, Sunday is their day of worship. That is their right. For others, some cared, some didn't and some ran. But I don't think Rochester is a community of intolerable and pretentious snobs. Rochester welcomed the race and those running, even those that would have preferred that the race had an alternate route this year due to the many road closures and inconveniences they have lived with since spring. But both the race and the day is over. Congratulations to all the winners.
