Officials say a Rochester Hills woman had her leg nearly amputated in a crash on a snowy Auburn Road on Thursday.

According to a report from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the 58-year-old woman was traveling west on Auburn west of Crooks Road at 9:10 a.m. Thursday when she lost control of her vehicle on the snow-covered roadway and crashed into a 12-inch diameter metal pipe that was used to vent a manhole cover.

"The metal pipe entered the passenger compartment of the vehicle striking the driver in the lower left leg," the report stated. "The driver’s leg was severely injured."

The sheriff's department and the Rochester Hills Fire Department arrived on the scene and found the woman to be conscious and talking; the driver was trapped in the car however, and her leg was nearly amputated, the report stated. 

The woman was transported to Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital; her condition was unknown.
