Where the Deer Are: Map Shows Hubs for Car-Deer Crashes in Rochester

There were 128 deer-vehicle crashes in 2010 in Rochester and Rochester Hills — the lowest number since 1999.

Walton Boulevard in front of Oakland University and Tienken Road between Adams and Livernois were two stretches of Rochester Hills roads with the most deer-vehicle crashes in 2010, according to data released by SEMCOG, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments.

There were 128 deer-vehicle crashes in Rochester and Rochester Hills last year, down from 2009. The city of Rochester Hills compiled the deer-vehicle crash data for that city into a color-coded map of where the accidents occurred.

Monday night, the Rochester Hills City Council agreed with the city's Deer Management Advisory Committee to not cull deer this year. Instead, there will be a focus on education (don't feed the deer, don't veer for deer) and awareness of where the high deer-vehicle crash zones are located.

There were no fatalities involving deer in Rochester or Rochester Hills — or in all of southeast Michigan — in 2010.

Oakland County had the most vehicle-deer crashes in the seven-county SEMCOG region. As far as municipalities, Rochester Hills ranked fourth in number of crashes, behind the townships of Oxford, Independence and Scio.

The deer-vehicle crashes in Rochester Hills have been on the decrease since 2007, when they peaked at 219 crashes; 2010 actually saw the least amount of deer-vehicle crashes since 1999.
