They Swam With Dolphins, Now They're Giving Back
Behen family of Rochester Hills is organizing family fun day Sunday to raise money for Make-A-Wish.
Seven years ago, Morgan Behen made a wish.
So did her parents.
Morgan's wish came true. She wanted to swim with dolphins, and for one magical week in the waters of Florida, she and her older sisters and her parents and even her best friend did just that.
Her parents' wish came true, too. Theirs was more complicated. Ted and Donetta Behen wished for their daughter to be cancer free.
Today, when Donetta Behen looks back on that time in her family's history, she thinks about those wishes. But she doesn't dwell; instead, the Rochester Hills mom is moving forward and giving back.
Sunday, the Behens invite families across Rochester to join them at Main Street Billiards, where they're planning a family fun event that they're calling Warm Up for Wishes. It will feature kid activities (face-painting, crafts and airbrush tattoos) and a DJ playing kid-friendly music on the dance floor.
The event is 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Admission is $7.95 for children and $$11.95 for adults and includes a buffet lunch. Proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan.
That's the organization that planned and paid for the Behen family's dolphin adventure seven years ago. With the event Sunday, they're hoping to make other families' wishes come true, too.
"Make-A-Wish is a great organization," Donetta Behen said. "They helped with the wish, yes, but they also helped with the emotional support of my whole family. They do more than just grant wishes there."
Morgan Behen had brain cancer as a child. Today she is a healthy 17-year-old senior at Adams High School.
Money raised during the Sunday event will specifically benefit the Wish a Mile 300 Bicycle Tour. The Behen family has a team riding the tour and their goal is to raise $66,700. That money will go directly toward granting wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Since 1984, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 6,400 wishes to children in Michigan.
"Donetta hasn't forgotten what Make-A-Wish brought to her family," said Laura Varon Brown, director of communications and public relations for the organization. "She wants to help other families experience that same magic."
The Behen family also organizes the popular Rubber Duckie Race held for the past three springs in Rochester Municipal Park. This year's race is planned for May 15.
"The community of Rochester is such a great community," Behen said. "They help out wherever there is a need."
Emily Puertas, who owns Main Street Billiards, is excited to collaborate with Behen on this weekend's Warm Up for Wishes event. "We hope this event will help make a wish," said Puertas. "Charities are struggling right now for every dollar."
Puertas also hopes the event will showcase the family friendliness of the restaurant, which her family has owned for 15 years.
"Most people know us as a nightclub, but this is a good opportunity to let people know that this is a place you can bring your kids, too," said Puertas, the mom of two boys, ages 12 and 9.
