Summit Sports Closing Rochester Hills Location

Summit Sports, a Michigan-based snow and water sports company, will close its Rochester Hills location by spring.
A banner across the Walton Boulevard store announced the closing and employees confirmed the store would shut its doors, likely by March. There are no plans to open a new location in town.
Everything in the store is at least 20 percent off.
Three other Summit Sports locations — in Brighton, Keego Harbor and East Lansing — will remain open.
In an interview with Crain's Detroit Business in 2010, Summit CEO Steve Kopitz said his company has evolved since its start in 1990, and now earned the majority of its revenues from e-commerce; its SummitOnline.com sells everything from hockey sticks to kayaks.
The Rochester Hills store is located across from Rochester High School in a plaza that Whole Foods Market vacated four years ago; two weeks ago, another plaza business, Great Oaks Laundry & Dry Cleaning, closed its doors.

This makes me a bit sad. While I cannot say I patronized the store, that strip mall is beginning to look like a consumer wasteland. Ugh, I cannot fathom the need for any new strip malls with so many retail vacancies around.

It's sad to see so much commercial space empty. Something is wrong.That's the ideal location, directly across from the high school. The new development just north of the hospital, 200 yards east seems to be thriving. I sure hope the right changes occur to bring that back. I used to shop there all the time when Whole Foods was there. It needs a good anchor...Another Trader Joe at this end of town or a small movie theater for independent films.

This just in: the store had been set to close March 31, but it will remain open until April 14 due to demand during its closing sale; all items are 50-80 percent off. Hockey equipment is 60 percent off.
