Rochester Jeweler Appraises Antiques on HGTV Show

Paul Haig, owner of Haig's of Rochester, to appear on "Cash & Cari" episode set for Saturday.

Paul Haig was not nervous about being on television.

The Rochester jeweler said he enjoyed his opportunity to appear on a national TV show.

Haig, owner of Haig’s of Rochester, will be the guest appraiser on a Saturday episode of Cash & Cari, a Home & Garden Television program that features estate sales expert Cari Cucksey. She finds antique items, has them appraised and then helps owners sell them.

Haig appeared in two episodes in the first season of the program, lending his expertise on Asian art. The show is based in Northville where Cucksey owns her store, RePurpose, and tapes most of its episodes in the Detroit area.

Haig 'really comes across on camera'

“I’ve been on TV a number of times in the past,” Haig said. “I thought it was a nice compliment. I didn’t do it to get any financial yield out of it. I did it as an interesting thing. The fact that it turned into something fruitful is good.”

Haig, in business for more than 40 years, was approached by HGTV about a year ago, he said. He did some phone interviews and appraised some pictures of Asian art for the show.

Cash & Cari, produced by Toronto-based Cineflix Productions, likes to use local appraisers for the program, said Tom Adams, series producer. He said he would be happy to use Haig again if the company gets more Asian pieces.

“He really comes across on camera,” Adams said. “He seems to be having fun. He’s very passionate about the specialty he has. He’s extremely passionate, very knowledgeable.”

Haig, 60, sells custom, classic and antique jewelry as well as Chinese, Japanese and graphic art out of his Main Street store.

He has been in the jewelry business since he was a child and has traveled all over the world buying and selling Asian art. At the store, he does brief, free appraisals by appointment. Haig also volunteers for historical societies in the area.

The episode of Cash & Cari featuring Paul Haig is set to air at 2 p.m. June 4, on HGTV.
