Record-Breaking Attendance Expected at Library's 'Polar Express'

The Rochester Hills Public Library says 750 have registered for the holiday event.

It's no secret that programs and events at the Rochester Hills Public Library are popular.

Lines have been known to wind around the building for the ice cream social in the summer. The Friends of the RHPL Used Book Sales always draw a crowd.

But it's possible the library has never seen an event as popular as this one.

On Friday, the Friends group will host its first "Polar Express" event. It will feature Santa and his elves, hot chocolate, continuous readings of The Polar Express and a trolley ride for families down Main Street to see the Big, Bright Lights.

Library Director Christine Hage said this week that 750 people registered for the event — a record number for a library program.

The program filled within the first few hours that registration opened Nov. 25, she said, and because of safety reasons and to prevent the building from being over capacity, registration was closed.

"We're excited that so many local residents are able to participate," Hage said. She said the library will work with the Rochester Fire Department to ensure that the building is not overcrowded.

More than 70 volunteers will be on hand to help with the event, which was devised as part of the Friends of the RHPL's 50-year celebration this year.

If you go

For those of you with tickets, a fun night is planned.

  • Santa will be on the second floor of the library talking to children.
  • Elf certification activities will take place in the library’s multipurpose room. Children will receive a “certified elf” ribbon.
  • Carolers from the Older Persons' Commission will be singing holiday songs.
  • A pastry chef from the Royal Park Hotel will help children decorate cookies.
  • Two trolleys will take families for rides down Main Street.
  • Children will be able to stop at the library’s “post office” and write a letter to Santa.
  • There will be continuous readings of the book The Polar Express — the inspiration for the evening.
  • Hot chocolate will be provided by The Funky Frog, and nougat candies will be provided by Sanders.

The event is from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday. Only registered guests will be able to attend.
