Unions were disappointed. Canadians were thrilled. All in all, reactions were varied as Michigan voters shot down all six statewide ballot proposals. (See all statewide election results here.)
The six state proposals on the Nov. 6 ballot in Michigan were:
- Proposal 12-1: The Emergency Manager Law would expand the powers of emergency managers in municipalities and school districts and allow the governor to appoint emergency managers.
- Proposal 12-2: Right to Collective Bargaining is a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would make collective bargaining a right for public and private workers.
- Proposal 12-3: Renewable Energy Standard is a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would require 25 percent of the state’s electricity to come from renewable energy sources.
- Proposal 12-4: Quality Home Care is a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would give home health care workers limited collective bargaining rights.
- Proposal 12-5: Limit Enactment of New State Taxes is a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would require a two-thirds majority of the state legislature or a statewide vote to raise state taxes.
- Proposal 12-6: Require Vote on International Bridges is a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would require a statewide vote to build international bridges or tunnels. This would affect the New International Trade Crossing (or new bridge to Canada).
How did you vote on these proposals?
Thanks. We'll email you the next time we update this story.

My chem professor is Canadian and was urging us to vote no on 6 (without telling us outright, haha). I'm sure he'll be in a super mood in class tomorrow!

Disappointed that prop 3 failed. Reminds me of the Irish version of the Great Flood and Noah. You who voted no are a bunch of unicorns who will be dancing in the streets and drown as the flood waters overtake you. There was a reason we needed a clean energy law in the State Constitution - to deminish the influence that the fossil fuel industry has over our legislators. Now they will just continue to buy influence.

Matty Moroun... the people spoke and you lost!!! As in $35 million dollars wasted on lies and BS to promote Prop 6 .... the "Peoples Choice on a new bridge to be competitive with your bridge". Be honest in your waning days on this planet-- You could care less about any people. Your only motivation in life is money and this People's Choice campaign was simply a facade of BS designed to create a legal guantlet to hold the United States and Canada hostage from building a bridge which will take revenue away from yours. The "people" are not stupid and 60% saw right through your plan. You also really p****ed off a lot of folks who now will move heaven and earth to see this new bridge gets put up immediately. Pathetic!!

I'm sure the only reason that anyone (other than 1 person) would vote yes on 6 would be because they misunderstood the question or wording. If they knew who or what was behind it than they would have voted No. That guy is a jerk who gets wealthy off of Detroit at the expense of those that live there. He has left so much in ruin. I'm so glad it didn't win but I didn't really think it had a shot to anyway. As I said, only if people misunderstood it.

Thanks Eddy! I was a Bio major and not an English Major in college so I'm sure I'm far from perfect but the passion is there. :-) I try to respect the beliefs of others even if I don't agree so long as they give me the same respect. I have plenty of friends with opposing views. I try to argue without resorting to name calling. This has been a very nasty election season though. I can't believe people have been getting so mean just because you don't agree with them. Do we want a country full of weak people where the bullies force you to follow their beliefs (bullies would be anyone who tries to force you to do something you don't want and can be in reference to anything not just politics)?
I prefer a country where we are all free to vote how we wish, practice whatever religion we wish and be free to speak of our minds without ridicule. Everyone is important. It doesn't matter how rich or poor you are. It doesn't mean I agree with one side or the other 100%. I can't stand each extreme end. I'm in the middle as is probably most of the country. So why we can't all work together is beyond me. I've just been in complete disgust over how terrible people have been behaving.

PS>> I also kept six of the flyers you sent to my house in the last 8 days before the election promoting Prop 6. Perhaps you would like these back to reuse in the parlor room of your Grosse Pointe mansion as but wipe. I hate to see our paper products natural resources go to waste.

To those who are glad prop 1 failed ....
..if you think an EM was bad for your failing city and/or schools, wait until a bankruptcy judge guts your city and school services. You'll be begging for the EM to come back.
Be careful what you wish for, you may just get it .... and you bankrupt cities will.

What's done is done. Not like you can change any votes now. Let it go... It probably won't be your problem anyway.

Any one who voted for proposal 6 must feel a bit like a sap. Now that his "let the people decide campaign" was soundly rejected by the people. he just turns to his lawyers for another attack. I guess the people deciding didn't mean much to Manny.

I think most failed because most of us do not feel the need to alter the constition. Where people want or need unions they have them or can get them. Why alter the constitution? If people really wanted to unionize I doubt they would have to go through what my Great Grandfather did at GM in his times. Prop 3...its not that I am opposed to renewable energy; I just don't think the constitution is the place to tackle it. Prop 6---Ugh! As for 5, well I think I may have voted yes. It should be a large majority or the people should have a say. I am not opposed to paying higher taxes but I want to know why and I would want to see appropriate and necessary cuts be made in return. :-) Oh well.

They attempted to go through the constitution, because that is the only way to get something enacted without going through the legislature. It was basically and end around by special interest groups. I am proud of all my fellow citizens for seeing through that and sending a very clear message.
As a side note: This is exactly how California got in such financial trouble. They passed dozens of proposals imbedded into the constitution and now are is a horrible financial state having seen 5 cities already declare bankruptcy.

All the Proposal's should have been handled by the Lansing legislators. Time to pay attention to Lansing the next two years and start electing better officials.

I disagree Duke. Most of those proposals didn't deserve consideration. Once certified though, proposals have to go to a public vote.

I think some of the proposals only real intent was to draw a certain demographic to the election. If the proposal passed, all the better from their point of view.

I am looking forward to the new bridge to Canada, to me the positives far outweigh any negatives. I am hoping the silly lawsuits delaying it do not ruin the project.
