Part of Downtown Rochester Evacuated After Car Hits Gas Meter

No one was injured in the Thursday night incident.

A downtown Rochester block was evacuated late Thursday night after a car drove into a natural gas meter in an alley behind Main Street.

According to assistant Rochester Fire Chief Tom Czerwinski, a call came into the Rochester Fire Department around 10 p.m. from a person who said he smelled gas in the alley. A car had driven into a meter there and then drove off.

The fire department shut off the gas and evacuated the block between Fourth Street and University Drive west of Main Street. Rojo, Penny Black and Mr. B's were evacuated; the other businesses were closed for the night, Czerwinski said.

There were no injuries, and the gas line was repaired.
