Owner Hopes Third Time's a Charm for New Nice Day Cafe

The cafe is the third restaurant to open in Goodison Station in the past year; the previous two cafes closed.

Michelle DeClercq hopes the third time will be the charm for her brand-new Nice Day Café, which will occupy the corner diner at Goodison Station near Orion and Collins roads. The restaurant will open Wednesday morning.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” said DeClercq, 35, of Rochester. “An opportunity came up a couple of times, but the timing didn’t work out for me and my family. This time it worked out, and it’s been smooth sailing.”

In the last six months, the corner diner has been home to three restaurants: the Village Café closed in December, while the InTown Café closed after only three months in business. The space has also been leased by Subway.

While the most recent owner served Coney Island-style food, DeClercq has created a more unique menu. The diner will sell custom-made sandwiches, salads and breakfast.

For instance, customers can pick their own cheese, meat and vegetables scrambled with eggs; the entrees will be served with hash browns and toast.

At lunch, they get their choice of cheese, meat and vegetables on a fresh roll to be served with chips and a pickle. Salads are custom-ordered, too.

The restaurant also will have yogurt, parfaits, bagels, egg sandwiches, quiches and egg casseroles along with homemade soup and Michigan products such as Faygo pop. For dessert, customers can choose from homemade pies, cookies, brownies or Sanders hot fudge sundaes.

DeClercq said she has dreamed of having her own business since she was a child. She worked in food service at the Palace of Auburn Hills for five years and has done event planning.

“It’s a passion of mine,” she said. “I like cooking; I like baking. It’s just a passion, and I’ll be able to bring that passion to the Café to other people.”

While the diner still has fresh paint from the previous owner, DeClercq will spruce up the space with colorful pictures, decorative bowls and vases, she said. The diner has a stainless steel kitchen and small tables and chairs. In addition, she hired one of the previous employees to help with cooking and serving.

“I love people and the regulars you get,” DeClercq said. “I like the interaction.”

Prices will range from $1.50 for a bagel to $6.50 for a breakfast platter. At lunch, prices will range from $2 for a cup of soup to $8 for a dinner salad.

DeClercq and her husband, Jeff, have two children. The couple started working on their new business at the beginning of May.
