How to Build a Scarecrow

I build one every year for the Stonewall Pumpkin Festival; here's a sneak peek at this year's creation and a look at how you can make one, too.

It's time for pumpkins — and scarecrows — in the city.

Today's at the will feature a full patch of pumpkins, as well as a display of scarecrows created by area businesses and organizations.

After the event, the scarecrows (with bellies full of hay) will move to downtown Rochester to greet passersby along Main Street.

Having built scarecrows every year since the festival began, I've come to learn a thing or two about the process.

This year, I put together a scarecrow donated by to in honor of the school's 50th anniversary. The scarecrow was patterned after the school's mascot, Howie the Cougar. I did most of the work during a scarecrow workshop at the museum earlier this week; it may be too late for this year, but consider purchasing and designing a scarecrow next year — it's a fun and creative way to spread the word about your business or cause.
