How Do You Say 'Lagniappe'?
We thought you might need a little help with the pronunciation as Rochester gets ready to celebrate.
Editor's note: This story was originally published Nov. 2011.
Monday night is the start of the Big, Bright Light Show in downtown Rochester — an event otherwise known as Lagniappe.
What's that, you say?
Exactly.
By now we know what the word means: Lagniappe is a small gift given to a customer (and it will be practiced Monday night in shops across town).
Here, with the help of a few downtown friends, we help you figure out once and for all how to say it.
The Big, Bright Lights Show lights up downtown Rochester starting at 7 tonight. The lights will be on from 6 to midnight through Jan. 6, 2013.

Can anyone tell us what time the lights actually go on? Is there a exact time scheduled?? My kids have been eagerly awaiting them going on, and I'd like to see the actual "switching on" if possible. Any insights would be appreciated! =)

The lights flip on tonight at 7, Michele! Ceremony begins at 6:45 at Fourth and Main, but you will be able to see the lights from anywhere downtown.

Thanks. Should also mention a thanks to all who said, "Sure!" without hesitation when we asked, "Can you say *Lagniappe* into the camera?" (Especially Joe Chila with his enthusiastic drumming "Lagniappe" shout-out!)
