Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

Help Us Choose Rochester's Best Restaurants — and Win!

The Detroit newspapers forgot about us, so "Around Town Laura" wants to know what you think: What are the best places to eat in our town?

I don't know if you've seen the lists, but the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press have each named their Top 10 Restaurants of 2010.

Here's the thing: Neither listed a single Rochester or Rochester Hills restaurant!

Bologna, I say!

I know there are plenty of wonderful places to eat in our town. And I know that you know it, too. I want to shine a light on the fabulous cuisine Rochester and Rochester Hills have to offer — and better yet, I want to reward you in the process.

Here's how it will work:

  • Post a comment here telling me about your favorite Rochester or Rochester Hills restaurant. You may tell me as much (plead your case) or as little (just tell me the restaurant name) as you like about your choice.
  • I know, I know. There are so many great places to eat in our town. So we'll let you comment up to three times (that's three of your favorite restaurants).
  • All comments must be posted by midnight Tuesday, Jan. 18, to be counted for the contest.
  • One winner will be selected in a random drawing Jan. 19. That winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to his or her favorite Rochester or Rochester Hills restaurant, as detailed in the winning comment.

The contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older. And this wouldn't be a contest without a complete list of official Patch contest rules; you can read them here.

Of course, I have another motive in leading this contest: I want to see which restaurants you think are our town's best. I promise to visit the most-liked restaurant and deem it "Around Town Laura's" choice — because we don't need the big city newspapers telling us where to eat, right?

Bon appetit, Rochester!

About this column: What's happening around town? Laura Cassar woke up this morning, stuffed her boys' backpacks, kissed her hunky husband goodbye and asked herself that very question. Here are her best answers. Need more Laura? Follow her on Twitter @AroundTownLaura Related Topics: #Edchoice

Sero's for breakfast. A great choice, good food, and terrific wait staff.
Two Sisters for cabbage soup - particularly when one has a cold.
(Gus) O'Connor's for corned beef and cabbage. Where else can you get good Irish food in a livey surounding. But pass up the bread pudding.
Kruse and Muir for the special night out.

I've had many great dinners at Meadowbrook Hall, but you need to have an occasion to go there. For a more casual dinner I would go to Kruse & Muer or the Grand Tavern.

Bonus: Fresco Wood Oven Pizza - great "authentic" wood oven pizza. Incredible crust.

Mind, Body & Spirit – I’m an omnivore, but can always find something I like on their menu.
Downtown Café – I hesitate to make my favorite little breakfast place even more crowded, but it is very good.
Kruse & Muir (Village) – I must order pizza from here once a week, they clearly put more care into their pizza than any of the big chain places.

Ok, I've only lived in the area for about 5 years, but there were several restaurants I'd never heard of. Someone needs to make an iPhone app or make sure they all participate on Recycle Bank.

I can't believe I'm the first to mention Paul's! Paul and his brother Irwin are just awesome; so are everyone else that works there. It's always slammed for breakfast on the weekends but the staff is always friendly and inviting. You can't go wrong with Paul's Omelet (my favorite) while my Wife enjoys either the Spinach & Feta Omelet or the Strawberry Pancakes.

Our family favorites have become
1. The Grand Tavern. A hidden little gem. The food is absolutely delicious. The portions are huge (always get doggie bags). Great prices. The specials are great (unbelievable crab legs). The kids menu is really fun and good. The service is terrific and friendly. Plus, you won't miss out on any sport game being played, because the place is filled with lots of tvs.
2. Kruse & Muir. A classic favorite for special occasions
3. Seros. Consistent good food for great prices.

I have to agree with Lois - The Grand Tavern is definitely a hidden gem - great menu selection, great prices and a family-friendly atmosphere. The only problem is, they are literally hidden back by Wal-mart and unless you know it's there, you'll miss it.

Went to the Grand Tavern tonight - great food, great service. Rochester Hills needs to let them put a sign on Adams to let people know where they are - between Walmart and Meijer! With so many great restaurants in Rochester and Rochester Hills, we need a dining guide to publicize them all!

1) mind, body, spirits. There aren't enough words to describe. It's healthy, it's yummy, and I feel good supporting a local venture.

2) kruse and muer on main. I've yet to have anything there I didn't like. I can eat and feel stuffed to the gills, see the specials, and start drooling.

3) Towne Square Pizza. Best pizza in the area, hands down, no arguments. We've tried various other pizzeria and are inevitably disappointed everytime.

My favorite is Gus O'Connors. They have turned this girl into a lover of Irish food, which no pub or place has been able to do thus far! They have a wonderful, lively atmosphere with inventive foods (Chicken BLT on pretzel bread w/special sauce--to die for!) and great appetizers (Bavarian Pretzel sticks with Cheddar Ale Dip--holy cow!) with a vast selection of drink options and a very fairly priced menu. One time (ONE time mind you) there was a mistake with my order and the chef himself came out to apologize and make it right. Who else does that?? If you haven't been, get there...NOW! --Sara Whitten

Depends on the mood but most often after hard days bike ride a good beer or two and a burger at Rochester Mills Brewery really hits the spot.
When taking the kids out for dinner the best bet is Ram's Horn at Hamlin and Rochester. Food is something we'll all eat and the service is great and accommodating of thing one and thing two

There are lots of wonderful restaurants in Rochester. WE are gifted with a variery. I love the Mexican authentic food at Miguels. For a nostalgic burger, you can't beat Knapps and for seafood, I love all of the appetizers at Mitchells. Rochester Cafe has the most wonderful cornbeef and poached egg breakfast and Seros has the most wonderful staff, who already know your order before you do. I guess we go there too much!!!

Great outdoor seating by the river, and awesome food specials every day of the week. Not to mention they have frequent live bands playing too! 1. Lipumas! They just don't know what a coney is here in AZ
2. Knapps..the burger to die for..is it still there?
3. Mr B's ...ribs and season fries...

Haven't even heard of half of these restaurants... ...sounds like most are chain types...Gimme small town family owned restaurants...I know Mr. B's has spread out..but I was one of the regulars when It was the only B's and it was a single long and narrow pub.

For me, it's easily hands-down Kruse and Muer. In the heart of Rochester, you have an upscale, full-service, local flavor experience. The staff is fantastic, the food is beyond reproach and even when something goes wrong (that steak is a bit too rare, for example) they go above and beyond in their recovery and I forget that I ever had an issue. There are other Kruse and Muer locations, but they don't compare. Whose with me?

There are several great restaurants in downtown Rochester like the Chop House, Kruse and Muer, Rochester Mills Co, Mind, Body & Spirits, Mr B's, etc. Kruse and Muer edged out everyone not only because of their varied delicious menu selections but primarily because of their service. Their staff are always smiling and acknowledging their guests. My family and I are specifically appreciative to a server named Kelly who since our first visit there has made our dining experience a class act each and every time. We always ask for her whenever we make our reservations. Kelly's excellent demeanor is exemplary of what Kruse and Muer is all about - fine dining, fine people and fine location.

Breakfast/Lunch/Anytime:
1. Downtown Cafe (Delicious food, outstanding service),
2. George's Coney Island (Affordable, consistent and great service),
3. Paul's (Delicious food, generous portions and friendly service).
All have great food, prices and extra attention by the owners and staff.

Sushi:
It's a tie - Sumo's or Take Sushi. Fresh, delicious food and courteous, friendly staff.
Promising: Sakura - creative sushi.

Thai/Asian: A tie (pardon the pun) - Thai Inn or Bangkok.

Pizza: Kruse & Muer on Main. Still looking for second-best. Add a Martha's Vineyard salad! Yum!

Ambiance: Lipuma's Coney Island in summer on the deck overlooking the Paint Creek and Trail.

Social Experience: Dairy Queen on Main after a hike/ride or on a hot summer night.

Dinner:
1. LINO's!
2. Kruse & Muer on Main.
Both promise an outstanding dining experience from start to finish.
Lino's gets number one for the extra effort by the Lino family and staff. They make every patron feel special and welcome.

TOP 3 destinations from an ethnic food-lover:
1. Lino's
2. Sumo's or Take Sushi
3. Rangoli (yes, it's Auburn Hills, but it rocks and like no other!).

In addition to great food, the Rochester area is blessed with restaurant owners, chefs, cooks and staff who take great pride in their work. They know it's not just about the food - friendly service and effort keeps us coming back for more. Thanks to all, even those not on my short list!

1. Lino's-Glad to see this underrated gem get some attention
2. Rochester Chop House- Along with Kruse and Muer they are consistently excellent. Love the sauces and the desserts
3. Tower Pizza-I love Antoniou's as well particularly because of the bread stick but give Tower the slightest edge on their pizza

I'm the type of person that looks for something different. You can get pizza from 1000 different places and no matter if one has a better crust or another has a good sauce, its all the same toppings and cheese. Once I had GEORGIO'S PIZZA & PASTA I won't go anywhere else for pizza. Huge NY style pizza with the best topping selection I've ever had. No one can deny it either because everytime I go in there, they're busy as all get out and the service is still great. I highly suggest trying it if you haven't yet!
