Gov. Snyder Will Speak During King Day Celebration at OU
Daymond John of "The Shark Tank" will also address the crowd at the annual Keeper of the Dream celebration on campus.
Michigan's governor will join the "godfather of urban fashion" in a ceremony honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Oakland University on Monday.
Gov. Rick Snyder will join Daymond John, star of The Shark Tank and creator of the FUBU fashion brand, for the university's Keeper of the Dream Scholarship Awards Celebration.
The annual celebration honors OU students who exemplify King's vision and help promote interracial acceptance and understanding.
"I am grateful to have the opportunity to take part in in this celebration of Dr. King's vision of advancing equality, social justice and opportunity for all," said Snyder in a statement released by OU. "I'm sure the three students selected for this esteemed award will use their passion and leadership abilities to continue this mission for their generation."
Snyder is scheduled to make remarks during the event; John is the keynote speaker.
John has established himself as a worldwide expert in business, branding and marketing; he has been nicknamed the "godfather of urban fashion."
"The Keeper of the Dream Scholarship Awards celebration is in many ways an event designed to promote social justice, and we're happy to have two very special guests who will certainly have valuable insights to share about making the most of Dr. King's Dream," said Omar Brown-El, director of OU's Center for Multicultural Initiatives and organizer of the Keeper of the Dream celebration.
The celebration is set for 11:30 a.m. Monday in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms on campus. For interactive and printable maps, visit oakland.edu/map. To learn more about the event, visit the Keeper of the Dream website at oakland.edu/kod.

Dr. King strongly fought for and believed in union rights. This is a disgrace.

Bingo......however, sounds like a great photo op! I think Snyder's speech would be great juxtaposed with the 'I Have a Dream Speech' in a Michael Moore-esque film, don't you think? I plan to rent 'Roger and Me' today as I am ashamed to say, have never seen it. I did spend an hour last night watching an interview with him from last year at one of the many film festivals. Now, THAT was very cool!
As I was successfully able to abstain from posting during the whole 'Gun Debate' which took place over the weekend (too volatile for me), I did want to thank Erin for his much needed balance on the issue. His professional experience has certainly come in handy. Thank you for 'paying it forward' Erin.
Also, was about to post a link......when I found the article was closed for comment.......'Thank you Gods of the Net'. Will post here..........food for thought from an environmentalist's point of view.....

A little off topic, but interesting nonetheless!

Mr. Snyder signed one of the most discriminatory bills in the history of our state - Ending partner benefits for same sex couples. Why would he be chosen to speak?

Can't we just be happy that our governor is coming to the area to celebrate King day? You don't have to agree to benefit from listening. I am here now. It is very cool.
