Downtown Restaurant to Close After 24 Years

Two Sisters owners say they are sad to say goodbye.

UPDATE: 2 Sisters is now closed.

2 Sisters, a downtown mainstay known for its made-from-scratch sauerkraut, pierogies and stuffed cabbage (among other Polish fare) will close its doors later this month.

The restaurant's management announced the closing on its Facebook page; Patch confirmed the news in person on Tuesday.

"It is with great sadness that we are announcing that we will be closing June 24th at 7p.m. permanently," the Facebook statement said. "Due to declining health of the owner and due to the construction that has crippled our business, we feel this is the time to close permanently.

"We would like to thank all our valued customers over the last 24 years ... and as we say goodbye we are very saddened!

"Thank you for the last 24 years!"

In a later post, the management commented that business has been down 75 percent since the Main Street Makeover project began in April.

In December, Patch told the story of how Two Sisters came to be in In Downtown Rochester's Polish Restaurant, Owner is Living the American Dream, which was reproduced on The Huffington Post for its "Dispatches" series on life in America.

This is one of our favorite family Restaurants in Rochester. There is nothing that can replace such loving, traditional Polish food.

It is sad to see such a long time business closing, especially one with such delicious food.... Loved the food, but not the environment. We used to eat here a lot, then stopped because every time we came in, one waitress in particular was always complaining about something in detail to a customer or other employees in her loud booming voice the entire time we were there, but then used few words and an annoyed tone when serving other tables including ours. Borderline rudeness and reporting your private business to the entire restaurant isn't the environment I want to TRY to enjoy my meal in. Matter of fact, the last time we were there she was describing in detail her confrontation with a city leader - that was the first time we'd been there in months, and I vowed I'd never go back. It's just wrong to air your dirty laundry in front of customers, regardless of who it's with or how annoyed you are.

Wow, some co-workers were talking about how they come to Rochester for Two Sisters, and how it's survived over the years - which is a real testament to their greatness! 24 years!

I'm sad to see them go, but not before I get a couple more meals!

June 24th at 7:00 PM? This is so sad . I love this place! My sister and her family come all the way from St Clair Shores to eat here. When I had company from England, I made sure they had at least one dinner here. We celebrated so many important family celebrations here: birthdays and Mothers' Days . The food was always fabulous. The soups were the best! I will be so sorry to lose this great place. I wish the owners the best. May God bless them always.

I tried it a few times and the food was good. Sad to hear that health problems but more so the construction is causing it to close. My favorite is still the Polish Village Cafe in Hamtramck. It is a long way to drive but the food, atmosphere and prices can't be beat.

To a resident: the place is closing after 24 years, its time to tell them Congrats and they will be missed. Not a time to throw them under the bus and complain about their business. The article is about them, don't make it about you.

To Big N-

I think the point that a resident is making is the fact that when you have employees complaining about the city that they live and work in public does nobody any good. I know if I went into a public place in a city where I was thinking about either moving or opening a business of my own and I heard these kind of comments being made It would cause me to reconsider my thoughts about that particular city. I have also heard these comments being made when dining there and it was disgusting to have to hear them Rochester is a great town with great city leadership and I am proud to call it my home. I will defend this town 100% to anyone who says otherwise.

They will be sorely missed by my husband and me. We love their food. My husband loves their Kraut Pierogis and I am addicted to their chicken & dumpling soup. Where will we get this kind of food without driving to Hamtramck. Sorry to hear about their ill health and we wish them well.

This place was overpriced., and the food wasn't anything special. If you want authentic Polish cuisine, Polish Village Cafe is where you need to go.

Brian,
This is Rochester not Hamtramck. To have an establishment here cost much more! The prices were very reasonable and the food is GREAT!! Go back to Hamtramck !!!

How sad that you are not hearing what that are saying, "due to the owners declining health", "How saddened we are to not serve you", How much they will miss you...We should be saying that we will pray for the owner with declining health, rather than kick them why they are down. They hired that employee that was not being professional....they are not responsible for the loose lips. Maybe you should have voiced it when it was going on instead of posting it cowardly when they are sadly stepping down after 24 devoted years of serving the Rochester Community. I for one wish them well and I hope you all will join me in praying for the owner's health and healing. God bless you Two Sisters:)

I love Two Sisters! My kids grew up there on Sundays! I'm hoping the Landlord of the building is reading this and tries to help. They have been quality tenants for 24 years. Cut them some slack and reduce there rent substantially to get them though these hard times. It only makes good business sense. How long do you think that building will sit empty (I guarantee the building will remain vacant for a 1.5 yrs min.) That's money you will never recover. Never mind the monies you will need to spend to get the dwelling up to date. Anyways, We will miss the Sisters! Great people with big hearts!!

I believe I went into this establishment maybe 2 x's for soup.....but I definitely feel a pull to help the home team....what can we do to help Two Sisters????? Come on people....We look over seas, but what can we do in our own back yard? Even if it is to deliver meals to them....as they have to us for the last 24 years..or to sit with the Sister and rotate people for a Chemo treatment....Let's pitch in as a Community to help these patrons:)

I agree Suzanne. We will give Billions upon Billions to people we never seen or will ever see in our lives, but will turn a blind eye for our needs at home. It's sad the City or the DDA didn't take a closer look at the project and maybe come up with a different way to get this job completed without effecting business. I understand a couple more long time staple of Downtown are on their way out also. If people would make a more concerted effort to get to downtown to spend some money, I know it's a little bit of a hassle, but I know they could use the support. Maybe the local papers could help to get the word out. I understand that change happens, but this seems a little unfair. I know I will be trying to promote my family and friends to help keep downtown going!

My husband and I started going regularly on Sunday mornings after church in October. They knew our orders and we were starting to become "regulars". The food was a great price and the atmosphere was nice for private conversations. We have already done a lot of growing there, it will be sad not to be able to continue. Good luck Two Sisters team!

I will really miss Two Sisters. My husband and I have introduced others to this great Polish food. I hope that the health issues lessen now that the stress of running a business is over. How sad! :(
