CRIME REPORT: Tracks in Snow Lead to Teen Theft Suspects
Sheriff's deputies say the boys had attempted to break into 30 cars Sunday morning.
Three Rochester Hills teenagers were arrested Sunday morning after Oakland County Sheriff's deputies responded to a series of reports of vehicle break-ins on Hessel Avenue.
Deputies investigating one of the break-ins discovered footprints in the snow leading to several more vehicles in the subdivision, which is near Auburn and Dequindre roads. They followed the tracks, which led them to the suspects.
The boys, ages 15 and 16, told deputies they broke into one garage and six vehicles and stole cameras, cash, checks and other items between midnight and 6 a.m. Sunday; they tried the doors of about 30 other locked vehicles.
Worker chases suspect from medical building
A 42-year-old Shelby Township man was caught Sunday night while breaking into a medical building under construction on South Boulevard near Dequindre Road.
The man was discovered by someone working in the building, who chased him into the city of Troy, where police there caught him. Later, investigators found a trash can full of copper pipe near the building; it was thought that the man stole the pipe from inside.
Skaters report theft from locker room
Someone stole money from a wallet inside a locker room at the Onyx Ice Arena on Jan. 19.
Four skaters told Rochester Police they watched a man walk into the locker room carrying a black and yellow bag while they were on the ice; he walked quickly out of the locker room shortly afterward, and when the skaters went to the locker room, they found their clothing had been thrown around and the money was missing. They chased the man to the parking lot, where they saw him driving away in a burgundy van, they told police. The incident is under investigation.
In other crime news:
- A 17-year-old Rochester Hills youth was arrested on theft charges after he allegedly took two bottles of vodka and attempted to leave Walmart without paying for them Thursday, according to a sheriff's department report.
- A woman shopping with her daughter at The Salvation Army on Jan. 12 reported that someone stole her wallet, which included her ID and credit cards, from her purse, according to a sheriff's department report. There are no suspects.
- A purple Dodge Stratus was stolen Jan. 13 from a home in the 100 block of Campbell Street. The owner told Rochester Police the vehicle was unlocked and that the key was broken off in the ignition.
